Message from Members at Large
Committee Update
Greetings SACSA Members,
I hope your summers are going well and that you finding time to recharge and dream big.
As one of your Member at Large (MAL) officers on the Executive Council I have the privilege to serve you in a variety of ways. One of my responsibilities this year is to partner with the VP of Member Relations, Don Stansberry, as we work through an audit of the Association's volunteer positions. We are currently gathering information from our committee chairs and plan to create general position descriptions that will include information such as job responsibilities, time commitment and other details. This audit will allow the Association to provide more meaningful volunteer experiences for members from our graduate students to our CSAOs.
I encourage you to find ways to get involved with the Association outside of the Annual Conference whether that be serving on a committee, being a reviewer for program proposals or connecting colleagues on your campuses to the Association and the resources we can provide them. I look forward to serving you and wish you all the best as you continue to educate, advocate and cultivate tomorrow's leaders on your campus.

Two Opportunities Celebrating Your Scholarship!
We are pleased to announce two opportunities that celebrate the scholarly endeavors of our colleagues' hard at work to advance the theory and practice of student affairs in doctoral programs and beyond.
SACSA 2018 Research Grant Awards
Supported by the
SACSA Foundation
via the generous donations of its membership
, SACSA encourages scholarly inquiry among its membership by annually awarding small grants to advance proposed research projects. Any individual or research team may apply for these competitive grants. The average award granted a single project is $500. However, the selection committee may choose to award funds in excess of this amount to grant proposals they feel are exceptional. Multiple research grants may be awarded in a given year depending on the availability of funding and the discretion of the selection committee.
SACSA 2018 Dissertation of the Year Award

, the Southern Association for College Student Affairs (SACSA) annually presents a Dissertation of the Year Award (DOY) to recognize high quality student affairs research by doctoral students in the SACSA region.
The DOY award recipient will be slotted to present the results of his/her/their dissertation research at SACSA's 2018 Annual Conference and will be notified by September 1 so that plans to attend the conference in November may be finalized. The DOY award recipient will also be honored at the conference awards ceremony and will receive a small monetary prize of $500. The DOY recipient is responsible for paying their own conference registration and travel fees up-front mindful that the monetary prize is intended to reimburse a portion of those expenses. The DOY award winner is also encouraged to submit an article about his/her/their dissertation research for possible publication in SACSA's College Student Affairs Journal (CSAJ) within a year after receiving the award. Articles authored by DOY recipients will be reviewed and selected in accordance with the standards set by the CSAJ Editorial board for blind peer-review.
Applications for both of these research related opportunities are due by 11:59 p.m. CDT on August 17th to Dr. Danielle K. Molina, Chair of the Research and Assessment Committee.

Mid-Manager's Institute

About MMI
MMI is the premiere professional development institute for mid-level Student Affairs Professions in the country. As a NASPA Region III and SACSA collaborative initiative, the geographic footprint spans across 11 states and impacts Southeastern college and university communities. MMI offers a five-day institute of intense learning, sharing, reflection, and networking designed to enhance the skills and dispositions of professionals that enables them to make more meaningful contributions to the students and programs they serve.
Benefits to Hosting MMI
MMI attracts emerging leaders in the field of Student Affairs. Supported by their institutions, MMI participants are nominated and selected to attend MMI. From the faculty to mid-level professionals, both groups represent a diverse cross-spectrum of functional areas in Student Affairs.
With the largest geographical region, NASPA Region III and SASCA draw mid-level professionals from all over the southeast. The selected host site will be featured on the NASPA Region III and SACSA websites during the month of June of each year and featured in both associations' newsletters.
Statement on Conference Locations
NASPA Region III and SACSA will make every effort to select conference cities, counties, and locations that have comprehensive non-discrimination policies providing protection for all attendees. Recognizing that our members are located in many states, we also believe it is important to support our colleagues in all states.
It is preferred that MMI is held in the month of June. MMI must not occur during the second full week in June due to NASPA Region III Summer Symposium scheduling.
SACSA and NASPA Region III will obtain and maintain liability insurance for the institute.
Institutional Investment
Colleges and universities selected to host MMI are expected to engage the institute on behalf of their Division of Student Affairs and their institution. As such, the Vice President for Student Affairs or the Senior Student Affairs Officer (VPSA/SSAO) should be available to assist the Local Arrangements Chair with navigating the institutional culture and politics to implement a high quality institute experience. The host site is required to submit the following documentation as part of the RFP:
- Letter of Commitment from the VPSA/SSAO indicating how the host institution will support the institutes through in-kind sponsorships and/or engagement by division staff and institutional faculty.
- Detailed description of any prorated fees for housing, food, transportation, meeting space, audio/visual equipment, or entertainment.
- Timeline of scheduled meetings leading up to the institute between the Local Arrangements Chair, VPSA/SSAO, and MMI Director.
- Completed Rubric with supporting documentation for any contributions, donations, or in-kind agreements in support of hosting MMI.
Scoring Rubric
Any institution interested in hosting MMI must complete a supplemental rubric. Points will be assigned to each category and scored by a five person review team consisting of representatives from both NASPA Region III and SACSA. Strength of proposals vary depending on the follow:
- Proximity to airports
- In-kind contributions (human or financial)
- Housing rates and accommodations
- Dining options
- Awareness of fair labor and non-discrimination policies
- Transportation/Commute to campus
- Availability of auxiliary event space (centralized)
- Ability to fund an hourly local coordinator
Interest and questions may be directed to either Denny Bubrig, Region III Professional Programs Coordinator or Janice Hicks, SACSA Vice President for Professional Development.
Completed RFP's may be submitted electronically to Denny Bubrig.
In site selection NASPA/SACSA make every effort to rotate locations around the region in order to minimize travel as much as possible for different geographic areas of our region at a time. With this in mind, first preferences for this RFP will go to institutions in Louisiana, Mississippi, or Texas.
The extended deadline for completed RFP's is July 15th.
