What is a Health Savings Account and Do I Need One?

If you are on a High Deductible Health Plan, you may want to consider opening a Health Savings Account (HSA) at MCCU!

A HSA offers a way to set aside funds to pay for your (and your family’s) medical expenses.

HSAs provide you with tax savings, and annual contributions (much like an IRA) may reduce your taxable income. Plus, your qualified distributions for medical expenses are never taxed.

The money you set aside in your HSA grows tax-deferred until age 65, when funds can be withdrawn for any non-medical purpose (taxes may apply) or tax-free when used for medical expenses.

MCCU’s Health Savings Account features:

  • $100 minimum balance to open and earn interest
  • No set-up or annual fees
  • Checks available
  • Unlimited check writing
  • Free Debit Card
  • Free Online & Mobile Banking

What is Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI)?

Mechanical Breakdown Insurance (MBI)   is worth considering, especially if you rely- like most people- on your car to get to work or getting your children to school. You can't be without a vehicle and your budget may not be able to sustain the unexpected repair fees or rental car charges. Mechanical Breakdown Insurance goes beyond warranties and covers electrical failure, transmission work, drive axles, and more.

MCCU’s MBI offers you:

Simple Claims Procedure
Your vehicle may be repaired at any licensed repair facility in the United States or Canada with prior approval.

60-Day Money Back Guarantee
As long as you have not filed a claim, you may cancel anytime during the first 60 days and get a 100% refund!

Plus, 100% of the cost may be included in your MCCU auto loan .

Transferable Coverage
If you should decide to sell your vehicle to a private owner, the coverage may be transferred. Or, if you prefer, you may cancel the coverage and request a pro-rated refund.

MCCU Gives Financial Literacy Workshop for Local High School Seniors

MCCU's Vice President of Marketing recently gave a financial literacy (smart money management) workshop to local high school seniors who are part of the TRiO Upward Bound program , at L.A. Valley College.

The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.

We love being able to educate our community about financial literacy and to help kids avoid financial hardships as they get older.

Katherine De La Torre, Academic Advisor for the TRiO Upward Bound program, praised the workshop and the credit union: " Matadors Community Credit Union came out to L.A. Valley College and did a fantastic job explaining important finance info to my seniors, soon to be adults. I wanted them to learn about credit scores, credit unions vs. banks, and just everything about money in general. Thank you Matadors Community Credit Union!"
