3-D Redux for Interactive Artwork at Trailside Park


Trailside Park features a unique piece of interactive art by local artist Reginald Adams. Adams painted a multi-colored lion directly on the sidewalk of the park's path. When viewed from certain angles, the lion takes on a three-dimensional effect.

Unfortunately, the elements took an early toll on the lion this spring. "It was originally created using tempura-based paint and covered with a sealant to protect it from foot traffic," Adams said. "But when exposed to rain, the water got underneath the paint and dislodged it from the concrete, creating flaking."

The solution? Pressure wash the lion away and start over using enamel-based paints, which bond better to concrete and are more resistant for long-term wear and tear. "Fortunately, the power wash left a 'ghost outline' of the lion for me to reference as I recreate the painting," Adams said. "This lion is such a cool feature of the park and we want to make sure it's made to last."



WDCF's School Supply Drive Continues through July 31

Nearly 20 Westchase District-area businesses are participating in the Westchase District Community Fund's school supply drive, taking place through July 31. 

Each location is hosting a donation box for school supplies that the WDCF will distribute among Sneed Elementary School, Paul Revere Middle School, Neighborhood Schools and West Houston Assistance Ministries. Cash donations also are accepted via PayPal.


Quillian Center Celebrates 60 Years with Party July 20

One of Westchase District's most recognizable attractions is the Quillian Center, located at 10570 Westpark Drive. A sports and recreation ministry of First Methodist Houston since 1959, Quillian Center has been the perfect spot for generations of families to go swimming and get active. 

Offering youth and adult sports leagues, after-school programs, kids nights out and Camp Gladiator classes, the center is also home to the famous Noah's Ark Swimming Pool as well as a full-sized swimming pool with dual slides and two diving boards. Quillian Center's summer camp programs are accredited by The American Camp Association and are among the best in Houston.

To celebrate Quillian Center's 60th birthday, the staff is throwing a pool party on Saturday July 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. The party is FREE and open to the public and will feature dinner and desserts, a water slide and backyard games. So grab your hippie beads, dust off those bell-bottom jeans and join the Quillian staff as they look back through the decades for a party that is sure to be FAR OUT!

Farm-tastic Summer Series Continues 

The third Thursdays of each month this summer at the farmers market will feature special activities for children and their families. Next up, on
Thursday, July 18, we'll have a free barnyard petting zoo (pet them, pick them up, take pictures with them!) for kids ages 12 and under. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Each child will receive a reusable shopping bag and $2.00 of "Market Moolah" to spend at the market (while supplies last).

Plus, Harris County Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer all of your gardening questions. So put down the electronics, pack up the family and plow on over to the market on July 18!

 

The market will feature a free barnyard petting zoo for children on July 18.

Keitha Gallien Joins District's Community Fund Board

Keitha Gallien was recently appointed as the latest addition to the Westchase District Community Fund Board of Directors.

Gallien is a partner trainer with Camp Gladiator, an outdoor fitness boot camp with locations throughout Houston. She has lived in Westchase District since 2016. "Along with my fitness skills, I have a background in digital marketing, account management and customer service," she said. "My life's mission is to impact the lives of people through mental strength and encouragement with physical fitness. I grew up in the Alief area and I think Westchase District is the place to be!"

The Westchase District Community Fund is the charitable arm of Westchase District. It is a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization overseen by a volunteer board of leading citizens who raise and grant money to advance projects that improve the quality of life for all who live in, work in and visit Westchase District.

Over time, Westchase District has earned a reputation as a low crime area, thanks to the consistent efforts of the Westchase District Patrol.

That success is tied directly to the high caliber of talented and ambitious patrol officers the District attracts. More than one quarter of the District's patrol officers hold the rank of Police Sergeant and nearly half of those officers made rank during their time working for Westchase District.

Leading this wave of excellence is Lieutenant Paul George, a 22-year Houston Police Department veteran who has spent half his career also working off-duty for Westchase District.
