The Lord's Prayer

Single Service, Sunday, July 14, 10:00 am, with a special congregational meeting immediately following worship.
Message from Pastor Tim
Dear Friends,

It occurred to me this week, after my sermon on the Lord's Prayer, that I don't offer it up very much except in church. As I said to the children, in the children's message on Sunday, our is an important word because it reminds us that even though we might offer this prayer alone, it is a prayer we offer with all our sisters and brothers in the church. We are all beloved children of God. So, this week, my morning devotions have been the Lord's Prayer, except I have prayed much slower, so I could ponder each phrase. This has been a useful experience because sometimes in church it seems like some of us, or all of us, are in a race to the finish line. Try it out. Offer it slowly. Praying slowly, or slower, goes with the general theme of summer: recreating yourself as God's disciple by "sabbathing", praying, resting and enjoying recreation.

This Sunday Pastor Jon will offer the second in a series of six sermons on the Lord's Prayer, and I will speak to our children about the second phrase of the Lord's Prayer: Thy Kingdom Come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. A reminder to all children 4 and older and their parents--our goal is to have everyone memorize the Lord's prayer by September.

I really appreciated Julia Kirby's announcement on Sunday, which was more like a devotion on Stewardship. As many of us will be traveling and "recreating" ourselves away from home this summer, let's remember to use electronic giving to keep up our commitment to stewardship.

During Vacation Bible School, I will be leading the adult class on Mister Rogers, who was a Presbyterian pastor. We will be watching the documentary on his life and discussing neighbors.  Won't you be my Neighbor? Who is my neighbor?  What was Mister Roger's understanding of neighbor and how does Jesus define neighbor. Here is a LINK to a review of the documentary.

See you in church on Sunday neighbor!

Verse and Prayers
He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” He said to them, “When you pray, say:

Father, hallowed be your name.
   Your kingdom come.
Give us each day our daily bread.
   And forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us.
And do not bring us to the time of trial.”

- Luke 11:1-4
Household Prayer: Morning

Gracious God,
we thank you for the peace of good sleep
and for keeping us safe throughout the night.
Let this new day be a time of praise and joy
as we go out to meet you in our sisters and brothers.
We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Household Prayer: Evening

Merciful Lord, as night comes to this house,
we thank you for the challenges and accomplishments of this day.
Give our hearts and minds the comfort now to rest in your care,
trusting that whatever tomorrow brings,
your hand will be ready to catch us if we fall. Amen.
This week, our introit continues to paraphrase the words of the Lord's Prayer, focusing on the passage "Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven." The choir will present a version of the Lord's Prayer during the offering that I grew up singing almost every Sunday of my childhood. My childhood church had a tradition of singing the Lord's Prayer during regular Sundays and then speaking various versions during communion celebrations.
