Summertime Greeting Bethlehem,
"At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" He called a child, whom he put among them, and said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me." - Matthew 18:1-5
I am writing this newsletter article in midst of the amazing, exhausting, wonderful insanity that is our VBS program. This year we have almost 100 kids in attendance in our program and it has been absolutely awesome. I've had so much fun getting to do the opening skit as the somewhat gruff Safari Sam, who ultimately becomes friends with a visiting "sound-ologist" (our very own Music Man Chris Matthews). As well as getting to lead the Imagination Station and do experiments with the kids. We've done baking soda volcanos, milk kaleidoscopes (or as I like to call them cow-leidoscopes), and various dry ice experiments.
The pureness of the joy, love, and excitement that these kids have is contagious. I couldn't help but hear the words from Matthew's Gospel ringing in my ear throughout this week. I was sitting in the back pew waving to the kids as they were leaving one day, giving high fives to some, and one little boy who couldn't reach decided to blow a kiss instead. When we were working on the cow-leidoscopes I warned one group not to stir the colors too quickly because doing so results in everything turning brown. One of the 4-year-old girls responded, "Yeah, but it's a brown we all helped make together!"
Often, as adults, we think that we are the ones with all the knowledge, and that it is our job to teach the younger generations. And while that definitely is part of what we are called to do, we can often lose sight of all that they have to teach us. The wisdom that comes from some of these kids is both humbling and inspiring. I invite you to come to church this Sunday and experience some of it for yourself!
Blessings,
Pastor Sam
P.S. Just as a reminder, we begin our new summer worship schedule this Sunday! Worship services are at 8:30 and 10:00 with educational opportunities for both kids and adults from 9:30-10:00.

Prayer Shawl Ministry
Five new beautiful shawls were added to our inventory. We have already distributed three shawls this year. If you know anyone who would benefit from receiving a prayer shawl (if he/she is going through a particularly difficult
or joyful time), please contact
janet.mastrogany@gmail.com, Please continue to create at home at your own pace - & if you are interested in learning how, we will pair you with an experienced knitter/crocheter! We meet every other month 9-11 at church (before or after your favorite service) for a casual drop in opportunity to knit/crochet and visit together.
Patterns are available at
www.shawlministry.com
.
Here is a quote from their website: "Shawls...made for centuries universal and embracing, symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving, God. They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, mother, hug, shelter and beautify. Those who have received these shawls have been uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to fly above their troubles."

....a Stephen Minister....
...can give you hope!
Summertime Stress Slowing you Down? We like to think of summer as being a relaxing, enjoyable time. But hurts, struggles, crises, and problems don't take a vacation. Many times our difficulties seem even worse during the summer because everyone else seems to be enjoying life while you are feeling down. A Stephen Minister can help. Stephen Ministers are trained caregivers, who will listen, encourage and, pray with you. Men are matched with male Stephen Ministers and women are matched with female Stephen Ministers. It's free. It's confidential. To find out more about Stephen Ministry talk with Pr. Laura, Pr. Sam or one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders, Molly Hall or Laure Reynolds.

Online Giving
A Green Path to Stewardship
We are always looking for ways to make giving more convenient and environmentally friendly. With today's online financial tools, it has never been easier to set up and track regular giving, special offerings and donations to specific areas. Just follow the easy steps provided with our new online service and you will be surprised at how easy it is to be a regular giver at whatever level seems right. We have expanded on the services provided by the same Minnesota-based online service that has managed our electronic giving for a number of years. They serve thousands of churches, and the service is secure, maintaining privacy.
How to get started...
You may access the online service by clicking on the link on Bethlehem's web Stewardship page. Once you are on the site, you may use your checking account, or your debit or credit card information. If your cards are on a mileage program, you can gain frequent-flier miles while helping support the ministries of Bethlehem. |
