City of Birmingham, MI
Old Woodward Reconstruction Project Update 7/09/18
Another week of the Old Woodward Reconstruction Project is underway with contractors starting to tackle the sectional sidewalk work that was discussed in Friday's (7-6-18) update.

Crews started the process on Monday, (7-9-18) on the south side of Maple, west of Old Woodward, by demolishing the old sidewalk. This will be followed on Tuesday, (7-10-18) by the installation of joints, cut into the new sidewalk using a concrete saw. A second crew is expected to do the same work on the north side of Maple, west of Old Woodward, on Tuesday 7-10-18 and again on Wednesday (7-11-18).

As a reminder, in order to ensure the safety of the public, your employees and contractors, it will not be feasible to maintain public access to front doors of stores and buildings during this 48 hour period. The walking conditions will be too dangerous while crews are carrying out this phase of work. Signs will be posted to direct customers to rear entrances of your building. Once the sidewalk has been cleaned, it will be opened to the public. The City recognizes that the sidewalk work will be disruptive to your businesses and buildings. The City appreciates your continued patience and cooperation as we work to complete this vital step in the reconstruction of Old Woodward.

Contractors completed the installation of the planter boxes for the new trees along Maple Rd. over the weekend. Other work such as the construction of the new traffic signals is ongoing along with electrical and irrigation work throughout the construction zone.

With a targeted completion date of early August, the underground infrastructure improvements and the above ground enhancements on Old Woodward will result in a modernized downtown core that City residents, merchants, stakeholders and visitors will be proud of and enjoy for decades to come. In the meantime, the public is encouraged to visit downtown and see the transformation first-hand while supporting city merchants. As a reminder, free parking in all City parking structures is now available on weekends (Saturday and Sunday) along with four, two-hour free valet parking stands strategically located near the construction zone.
