Reopening the Gallery ~ the Why, When, & How
|
|
We’ll never forget the month of May, 2020.
The short version: On April 27
th
, we posted an open letter, addressed to local and state authorities, regarding our intent to reopen the gallery on May 4
th,
, despite the indefinite and arbitrary forced-closure orders in response to the coronavirus. The letter,
published by the Napa Register
,
was shared around the valley, the country, and the world—and the floodgates of support and vitriol opened. In response to threatening phone calls, we hired fulltime security. TV news and newspapers covered our story. Social media about our story went viral.
The County threatened a restraining order against us and our landlord if we remained open. We obtained legal counsel. To protect our landlord, we closed for a few days, then reopened with his support and blessing. On May 26th, the
Pacific Legal Foundation
informed the County, as described in
this PLF press release
, that we would be filing for a restraining order against them in Federal court on constitutional grounds. The County decided that it was okay for us to be open after all. Thank you, Pacific Legal Foundation! On behalf of our thirty artists, thanks to all our fans, family, friends, neighbors, and clients who expressed support in emails, letters, donations towards security costs, offers to help with legal expenses, calls, visits, and art purchases. Through a very trying time, your support and encouragement has meant the world. As we’ve said reminded ourselves over this past month,
“Not dying is not living!”
With your support, the gallery is open again, and the art lives on.
