Message from the Senior Pastor

Dear Friends,

Having returned from Washington, DC, just a few days ago, I am still riding high from the experience. Sara, Tracy Allen, Greg Stupin and I had the honor of accompanying high school students and young adults from HCC (and a few friends) on a very fulfilling experience in our nation's capital.

Youth Service Opportunities Project (YSOP) hosted us in the heart of the city and connected us with the following well-organized and effective helping agencies:

A Wider Circle  provides furniture and other household items to those who are entering transitional housing.
Washington Parks and People refurbishes green and other common spaces for all to enjoy, bringing people together in heathy community.
DC Central Kitchen  provides food for shelters, school children, and other venues. DC Kitchen recovers food that would otherwise be thrown away. They also train at risk/formerly homeless folks in the culinary arts, readying them for employment.
Central Union Mission  serves homeless men, offering shelter, food, spiritual encouragement, and other services.
So Others Might Eat (SOME) serves hundreds of meals every day to women and men who are experiencing food insecurity.
Food and Friends  provides meals, groceries, and nutrition counseling to folks who are living with HIV/ AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses.
Seabury Resources for the Aging  provides housing and home care for the elderly, helping seniors to "age in place" by helping to maintain their homes.
Capital Area Food Bank distributes 23 million pounds of food (including 6 million pounds of fresh produce) to over 383,000 people each year through its 700 partner agencies.
We Are Family is an outreach and advocacy network started by seniors and their friends. They provide groceries, friendly visits, emergency cleaning assistance, transportation, and more.

Our youth and young adults truly understood the goals of the trip, worked hard together, enjoyed each other's company, had a lot of fun, and became a close community along the way. Those of you the were able to be in worship this past Sunday heard first hand how much the experience meant to them. Written reflections will be available soon on our church website.

Thank you to all our members and friends for supporting this amazing program!

Peace,    Pete

Christian Education                                       July 2019

HCC family and friends,

The last two weeks have been a whirlwind of United Church of Christ travel and excitement. The time I spent in Milwaukee at the UCC Open and Affirming coalition national gathering and at General Synod were extremely fruitful. There were excellent opportunities to network and make strong connections for HCC and myself.

The Open and Affirming Coalition has yet to post updates on their website in regards to the national gathering but to sign up for their bi-weekly email follow this link: https://openandaffirming.org/news/subscribe/

The time I spent at General Synod was also fruitful! I heard all about the resolutions before the delegates representing the church body and I also had some outstanding educational opportunities. Get a chance to view any of the large meetings here: https://www.ucc.org/synod_stream
I learned about the Green New Deal and was trained in using Naloxone (also called Narcan). Naloxone is the drug that reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. One point that was very clear to me was that there is no reason, at all, for towns, cities and states to be avoiding preparing all people with Narcan. It is extremely easy to administer and takes almost no training. I encourage any church person to consider getting trained in administering Narcan. http://www.getnaloxonenow.org/online_training.html

While at Synod, I heard from the author of Evicted (Matthew Desmond) and read about the communities most affected by poverty in Milwaukee. Having had Lyft drivers tell me I was staying in the rough part of town, I wondered about the church's role in addressing the complexities of housing insecurity, gun violence (which is present in all communities), and food insecurity.

The messy bow was tied neatly when I arrived in Washington DC to act on faith with the youth (and adult leaders) of HCC. We fed folks who lived on the streets, helped in soup kitchens, supported groups restoring 'violent' neighborhoods and worked with elders, children and families. This is the church's role AND so much more. We have to keep the conversation going.

In an effort to do this, I encourage any to check out the summer reading I will lead us in exploring this fall: https://hccucc.com/summer-reads/
In the month of July I have one week of vacation beginning tomorrow. I appreciate any prayers you can send my way as I head to a section of the Appalachian Trail in Vermont. If you want to read more about my trail experiences as a Queer Theologian Hiker, feel free to follow my blog at https://qthiker.org/

GREEN TIP FOR THE SUMMER
          HINGHAM OUTDOOR SUMMER WATER RESTRICTIONS
Aquarion Water Company, which still operates our Hingham water supply, has announced its twice-weekly sprinkler irrigation system schedule:

Most lawns only need about an inch of water per week (including rainfall) to stay green and healthy (20-30 mins. per watering x2/wk.) Morning watering is best time because the temperatures are the lowest this time of day. For more info. Go to chemistrycachet.com.

I will be out of the office and the church kitchen, etc. from July 7 thru July 15.
Next recycle pickup will be July 16.   Thanks for  helping  to care for Mother  Earth.

The Consignment Center Shares its Bounty

The 2018-19 season ended with a bang, as customers surged in on June 18 for a bonus event and took advantage of an unexpected Bag Sale; our last customer was glad to find two sports jackets for a grown son who works in the downtown financial district. Success!

We have been fortunate this year to develop a growing network of local charities and become aware of more specific local needs. Using this network, all of our remaining year-end merchandise was sorted and designated for summer distribution, and in-kind contributions were made directly to Catholic Charities, South Shore Foster Care, Wellspring, and the Salvation Army. Additional summer clothing along with donated new health care supplies will be added to a shipment bound for ASAPROSAR's rural medical clinics.

The volunteer staff met together on June 20 to review the year, offer suggestions for operational improvements, and vote on annual charitable giving. After consideration and discussion, a unanimous decision was made to provide financial support to the Hingham Girl Scout House, Seaside Animal Rescue, Womanade, EmpowerHER, Beautiful Day, Jasmine Gray-Bags of Hope, North Valley Community Children's Fund, Mass Audubon Land Acquisition Fund, Hingham Land Acquisition Trust, and Wellspring's summer lunch program for Hull students.

While the Consignment Center is currently closed for the summer months, we are actively seeking additional staff for fall. The growth in business volume and shop hours
will require a larger corps of workers to maintain consistent operations in the coming season. For as little as three hours a week (our minimum requirements for scheduling purposes), you can join our mission. If you want to learn more or have questions about how your skills and time could be utilized, contact Marcia Sinclair ( [email protected]), Gail shields ( [email protected]) or Sarah England ( [email protected]). Training for the new season will be held on Thursday, September 5.

On Friday July 12th, 2019, Lights for Liberty: A Vigil to End Human Detention Camps, will bring thousands of people to locations worldwide as well as to detention camps across country, into the streets and into their own front yards, to protest the inhumane conditions faced by refugees.

This is the local event for the South Shore area sponsored by South Shore Action, Sneakers Laced Up and the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus South Shore.

The event will take place at Old Ship Church, Parish Hall, 107 Main Street, Hingham from 8:00 to 9:00 PM with speakers and information on how you can assist families seeking asylum who are affected by this administration's cruel policies. This event will inspire us to recommit to this issue and take action.

Candlelight vigil at 8:55 PM. Candlelights will be provided.

Accessibility: The vigil will take place outside the Parish House on the lawn. The ground is uneven. Parking is available immediately next to the lawn on the driveway. From the Haiti Summer Team
Even though our Haiti Summer Team was unable to go to Haiti this year due to the current situation of violence and civil unrest, the summer camp went on without us thanks to the many donations from you all and the Oklahoma and California churches of our team members.  Many of the children's sponsors also stepped up to cover the cost of putting on the camp.  Gladys and her team did a great job and the kids loved it.  I am so happy that they didn't have to miss out on this summer camp experience that they look forward to each year!  Our church sent $1800 to help with the cost.
On behalf of the summer team, Gladys and the kids --- Mesi Anpil,  Thank you all so much!
Terri Fortin
