July 2019
Greetings!
It's July at Liberty and that means it's Member Appreciation Month! We know that our members are the most important part of our winning formula and we are eager to express our gratitude through exciting drawings, Golden Ticket Tuesdays, free tennis court times and other special treats!

As usual there are a variety of events and activities taking place at the club this month. On July 14 we are hosting a "Sound Journey" workshop which utilizes crystal singing bowls to facilitate improved health and vitality.

Make sure you take some time to enjoy the summer weather at our outdoor facility. We appreciate your membership and look forward to celebrating you!

In good health,

What's all the hype about coconut water?
From the desk of Susan Cutshaw, M.S. Nutritionist

The coconut's notoriety as a “superfood” has contributed to the increased sales in the U.S. It’s promoted by celebrities and of course the internet, but can it really live up to all its health claims?

Coconut water comes from young green coconuts. Unflavored (pure) coconut water contains vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, and electrolytes. It’s the electrolytes that make coconut water so attractive; 8 oz contain 600 mg of potassium, 252 mg of sodium and its 46 calories. Compare this to 8 oz of original Gatorade; 30 mg of potassium, 107 mg of sodium and its 80 calories. Americans generally do not get enough potassium in their diet, so coconut water is great for meeting potassium needs as well as general hydration. Even though coconut water has many benefits, be mindful of the calories; 1 cup contains around 46 calories.

As a post-exercise beverage, many experts recommend more traditional sports drinks rather than coconut water for intense exercise lasting over an hour. However, other research indicates that coconut water is just as good as traditional sports drinks following a bout of intense exercise. Commercial coconut water, on the other hand, has about half as much sodium when compared to sports drink and pure coconut water.

Bottom line
It’s really all about the taste and what feels better after an intense physical exercise session. If you’re thinking about giving pure coconut water a try, make sure to do that prior to any big competitions to avoid any unpleasant side effects from trying something new.

Enjoying The Fitness Floor
As with all changes in seasons, summertime at Liberty looks and feels a bit different from other times of the year. In addition to the fun and excitement of our outdoor facilities, the fitness floor sees some new traffic throughout the summer months. We want to ensure that our fitness floor space is safe and enjoyable for all members. We would like to take this opportunity to kindly highlight some of the fitness floor guidelines and policies designed for everyone's safety and enjoyment.

  • Please refrain from talking on your cell phone. The lobby and the seating area are convenient places to take phone calls.

  • Please wear appropriate footwear. Sandals and open toed shoes aren't permitted on the fitness floor, track, or basketball court.

  • Please replace your weights and small equipment. It can be frustrating for other members when equipment isn't kept in its usual spot. It is also frustrating to have to re- rack weights from a previous user.

  • Please allow others to "work in". We all need rests between sets. Likewise, feel free to ask trainers and other members if you can work in before they conduct their next set.

  • Please wipe down equipment after use.

We greatly appreciate your efforts toward helping us maintain a clean, safe and fun exercise environment at Liberty. Have a great summer!

Fall Program Registration

Get your calendars ready! Registration for Fall Programs opens to members on Monday, July 29!
Victoria Schon will lead us on a Crystal Singing Bowl Sound Journey. The tones produced by the bowls are not just heard by the hear, but felt in the body, with certain tones affecting your energy centers for healing, balancing and meditation. There is a beautiful simplicity in receiving a sound journey, as you are not required to do anything but lie down or sit in a comfortable position on a yoga mat. Join us for this special workshop!
