The visiting St. Louis Cardinals thumped the home team, 9-4 on Friday, July 5.

Last week, after the Giants put together a solid ten-run offensive performance against the D-backs, I commented that it may signal a momentum shift now past the midway point in the
2019 MLB season.
Well, San Francisco exhibited further signs of a momentum shift by winning five of six games, first on the road against their divisional opponent San Diego Padres.
Last Monday pitcher Jeff Samardzija turned in a vintage start, allowing just two runs over eight complete innings behind another uncharacteristic offensive performance from the Giants, this one for thirteen runs. Outfielder Austin Slater was called up from Triple-A Sacramento and recorded a triple alongside a home run in his 2019 MLB debut. Seeking three straight wins, San Francisco was again successful on the road as they handed another dominating defeat to San Diego, plating ten runs behind a two-jack effort from veteran Evan Longoria.
As the Giants faced an opportunity for a series sweep and four straight wins on Wednesday, San Diego logged five runs of their own. However, back-to-back homers from Alex Dickerson and Evan Longoria propelled the San Francisco offense to a 7-5 win and their first series sweep in any series longer than two games throughout the entire season thus far.
Drew Pomeranz started on the mound last Friday, heading into a three-game home weekend set with the St. Louis Cardinals, looking to stay hot. Unfortunately Pomeranz was lit up for four earned through four innings on the way to a hefty defeat, 9-4, at Oracle Park.
Regardless of San Francisco's less-than-stellar performance on Friday, Saturday's game forced a rubber match as the Giants emerged victorious by a score of 8-4. Austin Slater, called up on Monday, was the difference-maker in this win, smoking his first career grand slam in a pinch-hit appearance to
put the Giants up, 5-1.
On Sunday the Giants earned back-to-back series victories to make the week a bright spot in an otherwise dismal season, finishing with a 1-0 win in a pitcher's duel with St. Louis. Evan Longoria showed his strength again here, knocking a home run for the only run of the entire ballgame.
The Giants take the week off for the All-Star break but return to play for a three games against the Brewers in Milwaukee on Friday.

Slowly easing out of their season-long .500 dungeon, the Oakland Athletics made their last week before the All-Star break count.
Leading off the week at the Oakland Coliseum against the AL Central first-place Minnesota Twins, the A's faced a tough opponent if they wanted to stack up some wins. However, Oakland emerged with a victory in the first matchup, winning 8-6. Catcher Chris Hermann made his A's debut and smashed a grand slam for his first Oakland hit, becoming the first player in franchise history to rip a bases-loaded bomb in his debut.
The Athletics put up three in the second inning of Wednesday's bout but were unable to respond as Minnesota sent it to extras and emerged victorious, 4-3, in twelve. The loss was charged to closer Blake Treinen who made his return to the lineup after being placed on the 10-day IL following a rotator cuff strain. In turn, Aaron Brooks was Designated For Assignment (DFA). In the Fourth of July rubber match the A's put on a show for the home crowd as Marcus Semien juiced
a grand slam on the way to a 7-2 win and the series victory.
Looking to stay hot and log their fourth straight series win, the Athletics took a trip to Seattle for a three-game set which began on Friday. In the first bout Oakland walked away with a 5-2 win as Franklin Barreto knocked his first homer of the season and Brett Anderson turned in a solid
five-hit, two-run start over six and a third innings. The Athletics were unable to secure the series win outright on Saturday, as they were dealt a 6-3 defeat via Marco Gonzales's strong start and Daniel Vogelbach's explosive offensive performance. Ultimately, the Athletics did earn their fourth straight series win as they handed the Mariners a 7-4 loss on Sunday. Before the game Matt Chapman was selected to compete in the 2019 Home Run Derby as a replacement for Brewers stud Christian Yelich, who is now out with an injury.
Liam Hendriks will represent Oakland, alongside Matt Chapman, at the All-Star Game. Hendriks was chosen as a replacement for Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Charlie Morton for the Midsummer Classic. After the All-Star break, Oakland returns to regular season play at home for a three-game matchup with the Chicago White Sox starting Friday night.
