January 2020

As we begin the new year, take time to reflect and give thanks for the gifts you've been given and the good people in your life. Expressing thankfulness can help improve not only your outlook on life but your overall health as well. In fact, research by UCLA Mindfulness Research Center found that practicing "an attitude of gratitude" can enable actual physical changes in the molecular structure of the brain that keeps the gray matter functioning, making people healthier and happier. "When you feel happiness, the central nervous system is affected. You are more peaceful, less reactive, and less resistant."

Spread the good this year --  practice gratitude daily for your own health and the health of others. And remember, whatever health goals you set in 2020, we would love to partner with you to achieve them!

Wishing you a happy and healthy New Year,

New Yale Study:   Chiropractic Care for Back Pain Tied to Lower Odds of Opioid Use

The most recent government data on opioids is alarming: 2 million Americans had an opioid disorder in 2018, and deaths from oxycodone, hydrocodone and methadone overdose are now estimated at more than 130 people per day.

The numbers are staggering. Experts pin the origins of today's opioid crisis to over- prescribing of painkillers to treat moderate to severe pain. The frightening fact is this: anyone who uses painkillers can become addicted. Calls from the CDC to "prevent abuse, addiction, and overdose before they start" are a rally cry for the widespread adoption of non-pharmacological approaches to pain, such as chiropractic care.

Research from a new Yale School of Medicine study found that people with chronic spinal pain who sought care from a chiropractor were 64% less likely to use opioids than people who didn't. Published in the journal Pain Medicine, the authors maintain that when a patient is under chiropractic care, there is less of a need, or no need at all for pain medication.

Chiropractic care can not only help  decrease pain, but improve range of motion and increase function, helping to improve quality of life without the use of potentially harmful drugs.  If you or a loved one are suffering with chronic pain and are seeking an alternative to a dependency on painkillers, please come in for a visit to learn about our non-drug approach to pain relief and healing.

Make Yoga a Part of Your
New Year's Brain Health Plan!

Here's a tip to grow your brain in 2020 -- commit to a daily regimen of yoga!

A meta analysis of 11 studies comparing yoga practitioners to non-practitioners found Hatha yoga to be as beneficial as aerobic exercise for enhancing brain function. Using MRI, fMRI or scans to measure growth in brain regions, scientists were able to track changes in the participants' hippocampus, amygdala and the prefrontal cortex, areas involved in learning and memory, emotions and reactions, and decision-making and multitasking, respectively. The hippocampus growth is particularly promising as a potential tool to guard against Alzheimer's disease, stress and depression which are linked to a smaller hippocampus.

Hatha yoga involves asanas, or postures, and pranayama, or breathing exercises, that are relatively gentle and slow, making it an ideal practice for beginners or seniors to help improve muscle tone and balance, build stronger bones and enhance flexibility and cognition.

Commenting on the new study on the link between yoga and brain function, Sarah K. Greco, yoga therapist at New Life Wellness Center, says, "It's so exciting when science validates what we know from experience. Over the past two decades, I've witnessed countless yoga students become more enlivened mentally and intellectually as a result of their physical practice. I've learned from wise and clever older men and women, and have attributed their mental agility to their yoga practice. The research removes the mystery of such connection and emphasizes the benefit of practice. I think it's especially exciting because moving and breathing together can be so simple, and everyone can do it."

Fatty Diets Tied to Vision Loss in Seniors

burger-fries.jpg
Is adopting a better diet one of your New Year's resolutions? If so, you are in good company, as eating more healthfully is one of the top goals for 2020. While watching what you eat can shrink the waistline and help maintain an optimal weight, it's also essential to your eye health, as a new study reveals.

Research from the University of Buffalo has found a link between fatty diets and age-related macular degeneration (AMD), an irreversible eye condition that damages the retina and causes loss of vision. The study, the first in the U.S. to examine diet patterns and the development of AMD, tracked 1300 participants for 18 years. Data showed that participants who regularly consumed red and processed meats, refined grains, butter and fried food were three times more likely to develop AMD.

Experts say that AMD occurs over a few decades, so embarking on a healthy diet earlier on in life is paramount to eye health and overall wellness. Green leafy vegetables, fruits and fatty fish contain important nutrients that can bolster eye health.

Adult ADHD has Almost Doubled in the Last Decade

Does it take forever to start a project... or finish it for that matter? Are you frequently forgetful, late or disorganized? Is it difficult to sit still, pay attention or stay focused in meetings? As adults, too often we attribute these bad habits to having a full plate of responsibilities, when in fact, they may be subtle symptoms of a very real neurological disorder.

The latest statistics in a study published in the Journal Open Network published by the American Medical Association show that the rates of adult Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have nearly doubled among adults in the U.S. over the past 10 years. Researchers maintain that increased recognition of ADHD symptoms by doctors as well as increased public awareness are most likely the source of the uptick in diagnoses. Of significance is that the study results found that adults with ADHD were more likely to have depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety or eating issues, as well as higher rates of health care use and sexually transmitted infections.

ADHD in adulthood can often be traced back to the childhood years where symptoms likely went undetected, dismissed as bad behavior, or the individual discovered coping mechanisms to compensate for symptoms. In adults especially, an ADHD diagnosis can easily be missed due to the comorbid health conditions mentioned above. Left unaddressed, adults with ADHD can experience problems in the workplace, marital stress and financial problems. ADHD is not a behavioral disorder, rather it is a neurobiological disorder characterized by chronic dysregulation in the brain that triggers symptoms that can affect behavior. Neurofeedback therapy is an effective, non-pharmacological approach that can help to retrain dysregulated brain-wave patterns into normal patterns to help overcome symptoms. A QEEG brain map is the best approach to pinpointing the areas of the brain that are experiencing dysfunction and can help provide a road map for healing.

If life has become overwhelming and your feelings, habits and/or behaviors are hindering your success or impeding relationships, give our office a call and schedule a "Q" to discover whether ADHD is the source of your challenges. 631.265.1223.
