Cabling Upgrade at Saint Joseph Medical Center, University of Maryland
|
|
UM St. Joseph Medical Center (SJMC), founded in 1864, is a 218-bed Catholic, not-for-profit regional medical center in Towson, Maryland. The center offers a wide range of clinical programs and centers of excellence, including the Cancer, Heart and Orthopaedic Institutes, Women and Children's services, and Emergency Medicine.
To continue fulfilling its mission of providing compassionate, leading-edge healthcare to all, SJMC engaged MacKenzie Contracting Company to upgrade and expand its data network. In turn, MacKenzie brought in its trusted partner, DataLink, to handle cable distribution for the project.
DataLink representatives met onsite with SJMC and MacKenzie technical staff to discuss the cabling requirements and to formulate an implementation plan.
The project called for a full 45U 4 post rack and cable tray build-out for the server room, which DataLink accomplished with infrastructure hardware from Chatsworth Products.
Also installed by DataLink was Berk-Tek cabling for 84 duplex drops and 12 single drops from the server room to termination points throughout the medical center. At each drop location, DataLink used termination hardware from Ortonics.
The success of the project was the result of the professional collaboration between SJMC, MacKenzie, and DataLink’s project teams; and more specifically, their expertise in designing and deploying IT projects on time and on budget.
Whether you need to connect a new building, a renovation, or a campus addition, DataLink is ready to team up with your partners, facilities team and architect to design, install, test, certify, manage and maintain the entire IT infrastructure.

As the ‘Internet of Things’ grows rapidly, keep an eye on Cyber Security
|
|
The Internet of Things (IoT) is the global network of physical objects embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data over the Internet.
Networking appliances and other objects offer convenience and tremendous efficiencies for businesses and consumers, but security can’t be overlooked.
- Older IoT products with outdated and unpatched operating systems and software will need attention.
- Some IoT users fail to change the default passwords on smart devices - or if they do change them - fail to select strong passwords.
- Connected devices introduced by employees to company networks pose some of the greatest risks, so companies will need to roll out tailored best practices and IT policies.
One example of a smart approach to include in your rollouts - IoT devices that need to be directly accessible over the Internet, should be segmented onto their own network with access restrictions in place. The network segment should then be monitored to identify potential anomalous traffic, and action should be taken if there is a problem.
DataLink is ready to assist in vetting your IoT devices and software, and then integrating them in a way that ensures IT security.
Our team of experts will help you:
- Streamline and accelerate how IoT gets deployed and scaled across your enterprise.
- Simplify the complexities of managing connected "things.”
- Access accurate and real-time device and network health, and provide the ability to act when issues arise
Don’t sacrifice your IT security for convenience… DataLink can help you implement best practices and tools to keep your business safe.

Managing a Hybrid or Remote Workforce… 6 Ways Cloud Computing can help
|
|
Cloud computing has come a long way over the years. In terms of performance and reliability, the concept has amply proven itself. With regard to cost-effectiveness, the annual savings on business operating costs are indisputable.
With the movement toward remote and hybrid workforces, driven by the COVID pandemic, cloud computing is playing a pivotal role in helping businesses not just survive, but thrive.
Here are six ways cloud computing can benefit your business in this new work environment:
1. Deliver secure remote access to employees: Ensure your employees receive a reliable, secure, high-quality experience when accessing the apps and data they need - no matter what type of network connection they use.
2. Provide employees with flexibility to work anytime, anywhere: Work is no longer a place - it's something you enable with the greatest security and flexibility. Use app and desktop virtualization to embrace workforce mobility and empower your employees to work anywhere, anytime, on any device.
3. Empower mobile users without compromising security: Having sensitive business data stored on employee devices increases vulnerability. Virtualize your apps and desktops to keep your data secure in the cloud... With a Cloud Desktop, you don't have to worry when a device is lost or stolen because network access can be instantly terminated.
4. Make managing desktops easier and more efficient: Implement app and desktop virtualization to automate and centralize management. You can stop patching and updating your employees' desktops on an individual, manual basis - saving you time, money and frustration.
5. Get new employees up and running in minutes: Use any available devices - legacy PCs, laptops or mobile devices - and reduce your new hires' wait time to productivity.
6. Keep employees productive during business disruptions: Empower your employees to work remotely during business disruptions - anywhere, anytime, on any device - with secure access to the apps and data they depend on.
