Summer is here and the heat is on. Our Irrigation course kept us cool throughout June reflecting on global water consumption and installing a drip irrigation system at
La Finca del Sur
. Now that Crop Management is underway, our co-teacher Mayfield Brooks welcomed us to
Morris Campus Farm
for the first time, where she is farm manager.
Meanwhile, Farm Intensive students are in full swing with their rotations, harvesting for CSA, and
The Youth Farm market is now open
on Wednesday afternoons. Advanced students are learning new skills at their apprenticeships, while Advanced Teaching regrounded us in popular education. Wishing everyone a balance of water and sun to soothe us through this season.

What's Next?
Summer courses are well under way! There are just a few more spaces left for Plant Health, taught by our alumni, Anandi Premlall!
This course is an introduction to pest and disease management for food crops. We will identify common NYC pests and diseases, and discuss prevention and management strategies through an organic, ecological and multi-cultural lens.

Hawai'i Bans Use of Toxic Pesticide
After years of grassroots efforts by advocacy groups and communities, the governor of Hawai'i signed a bill banning the use of chlorpyrifos, becoming the first U.S. state to do so! Chlorpyrifos is a widely used pesticide that is often sprayed in proximity to schools and neighborhoods, harming both the workers and local residents. For more information, check out this

by the Center for Food Safety! Hopefully this action will serve as a precedent for other states to take similar action, as conversations are already underway in New York State.

Late Blight
We don't farm in isolation. Everything is connected-- including blight! Late blight is a plant disease that has the potential to cause devastation to tomatoes and potatoes, infecting and destroying the leaves, stems, fruits, and tubers.
NYS Dept of Agriculture encourages everyone
to report instances to help track the spread of plant disease each season. You can find out more at your local
