Addition will improve healthcare and Help Center services
Poor health and homelessness go hand in hand. It's hard to be healthy when you're under stress and living outdoors or in temporary quarters.

Our seven-bed respite unit and adjacent clinic are too small for the 125 guests we expect there next year.

Better facilities are on the way: a new addition has more space for healthcare and for our much-used Help Center, which offers a variety of assistance as guests chart their way back to permanent housing.

The $500,000 addition is funded by a grant from the state Department of Housing and a gift from the Edward and Mary Lord Foundation .

Construction will wrap up this spring. It was celebrated at a press conference Nov. 27. View story in The Day.

Shelter addition, housing and healthcare are topics for Zall on 'Thinking Green'
What services will be offered in the shelter addition? Are there real solutions to homelessness? Why is healthcare important?

These were a few of the questions HHC's executive director, Cathy Zall, discussed Nov. 27 on Ronna Stuller's "Thinking Green" cable show.

"Shelter should be short-term and temporary," Zall said, adding that HHC's focus is on helping people find permanent housing.
