President's Note

Hello Friends,

If you are reading this, I need to tell you something that is important. Did you know we built this Arts Gallery for you? We worked very hard to create a place for you to come and feel like it's a part of you. We just don't want you to enter art shows, we want you to be a part of the whole package! So, lets come together and step up to help gallery sit. It's not that hard, it's only a few hours, you will meet new people, you can even work on your artwork. If we are to sell art, we must be open. We need weekend coverage only until the end of December. We will be closed for the winter months and re-open after our annual Spring Show. Oh, and you also don't have to be a member. Any supporter of the arts can volunteer. I hope to hear from you soon.

Saturdays: 12:00 - 5:00 pm
Sundays: 12:00 - 5:00 pm

Please view our calendar for available time slots and email Georgia Griffin at [email protected] to sign up.

We have a lot going on! Check your emails, Facebook and our newsletter for our upcoming en plein air, art critiques, photography exhibit, and small works holiday sale. We will also be a part of the Fitchburg Art Tour.

Sincerely,

Deb Giordano
President of GALA

Same Planet, Different Worlds: The Art of Doreen LaScola and Joe Smith

Gardner Ale House
October 4 through November 15, 2018
Artist's Reception, Sunday, October 21, 2018, 1 to 3 pm.

Award winning artists Doreen LaScola and Joe Smith will be displaying their recent works on the walls of the Gardner Ale House from October 4 through November 15. Doreen and Joe are outdoor painting companions, whose idea of a good time is to set up their easels in a garden or a park and paint the day away. Although they are often painting the same scene, their interpretation of it is always very different. While Doreen uses the setting as an inspiration for colorful abstracts, Joe seeks a more realistic interpretation of the scene. Many of the pieces shown are from local settings such as Otter River, Doanes Falls and Joe's back yard.

An artists' reception will be held on Sunday, October 21, from 1 to 3 pm.

The Ale House is located at 74 Parker St., Gardner, MA. It is open at 11:30 Monday through Saturday and at 9 am on Sundays. All artwork is for sale.

Bearing Witness
Gallery Sitka West, Fitchburg, MA

Adventurous Abstract Expressionist Leads Group of Central Mass. Artists in Fall Show
Oct. 6, 2-4 p.m., at Gallery Sitka West

Mia Scheffey creates a picture by intuition. She has no finished image in mind when she begins to paint. She does not simply execute a preconceived idea, following some linear logic. Instead, she builds a painting by making a mark - a brush stroke - that feels right, then in effect allows the picture to "answer" her with another message about which mark, which color, which texture needs to come next. The process can't be rushed. It is a kind of dialogue, Ms. Scheffey says, a conversation between the painter and the painting.

The Vermont-based abstract expressionist will be the featured artist in a women-only exhibition entitled "Bearing Witness," organized by the Central Massachusetts Chapter of The Women's Caucus for Art (WCA) and mounted at Gallery Sitka in Fitchburg, Mass. Helen Obermeyer Simmons, President of the Central Mass. Chapter, explains that the exhibit will focus on the artists' sharing of experiences (which in some cases were traumatic) as the mainspring for their artwork. "When important events have taken place in my life," Ms. Obermeyer Simmons says, recalling the death of family members and the birth of her children, "my first response is to make an image."

"Bearing Witness" is an all-women project focusing on the concerns and commitments of women everywhere, employing work in pastel, watercolor, printmaking, photography, fiber art, sculpture and collage from a feminine and feminist perspective. Artists who will participate in the exhibit include WCA members Gail Bloom, C.M. Judge, Helen Obermeyer Simmons, Tamar Russell Brown, owner of Gallery Sitka, Kate Shaffer, Joanne Stowell, Sylvia Vander Sluis, Elsa Voelcker and Susan Wadsworth. Other Gallery Sitka artists will also be represented in this show.

This opening reception will take place on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2 - 4 p.m., at Gallery Sitka West, 454 Main St. in downtown Fitchburg. The exhibition continues at the gallery through Dec. 1. Art lovers are encouraged to go to gallerysitka.com and miascheffey.com for more information.

From doodling at a young age to being introduced to sculpting in high school, Michael has always been interested in the arts. As a kid, he was a huge monster movie fan and always wanted to work in the special effect industry. He attended the Tom Savini Special Effect Makeup Program in Monessen, Pennsylvania, and learned his craft from industry professionals and very talented artists. Attendees should pre-register by Wednesday, October 17th and plan to bring their own pumpkin and a snack or lunch to the class. Fall Workshops for Artists
Arts Alive!, Keene, NH

Arts Alive! and The Hannah Grimes Center, both of Keene, will continue their Artist to Artist workshop series this fall with a focus on "Deepening the Work" - exploring opportunities for artists to develop and improve their artistic practice and products.

The Artist to Artist workshop series is an affordable opportunity for artists, performers, and craftspeople to learn more about topics like how best to use an artist residency, what opportunities a grant can open up for artists, how to share peer critique, and how to ready work for a fine art gallery.

Presenters in this series include Virginia Lupi, director of the NH State Council on the Arts who will teach the grants workshop; Davic Macy, residency director of the MacDowell Colony who will teach the workshop on residencies; Craig Stockwell, of NH Institute of Art who will teach the workshop on peer critique; and Jim Giddings and Petria Mitchell who will teach a workshop on working with fine art galleries.

The workshops will take place in October and November across the Monadnock region - from Spofford to Peterborough - at arts-friendly locations like galleries, studios, and arts centers.

Those interested in the workshops can register online. Registration for each workshop is $10 general public, $5 Arts Alive! members.

Colored Pencil with Kendra Ferreira
Monadnock Area Artists Association, Keene, NH

Monadnock Area Artists Association is pleased to have the following workshop:

Colored Pencil with Kendra Ferreira
November 10, 2018

In this fun and informative workshop students will learn to create vibrant drawings with the simple tool of colored pencils by layering colors, blending, burnishing, and creating rich darks and vibrant colors. Colored pencils are an easy transported medium and can be used for simple sketches to complex layered drawings. In this workshop we will be combining and learning about dry colored pencils with watercolor pencils and how this mixed media approach allows for a quicker build up of color and value. Artists of all levels will enjoy expanding the boundaries of this versatile colored pencil medium.

We will begin with a short discussion on materials then a demo about applying the pencils, mixing and layering colors and burnishing. Students will then work from a still life set up or photos if they wish. I like to work individually with each student during the workshop to their own abilities. Some materials will be provided, I do have some colored pencils and watercolor pencils for students to borrow during the workshop. Registration form
