17 Things Every Parent Should Know About Practice
1. Practicing every day for short periods is more effective than practicing for longer, less frequent sessions.
2. Practicing at the same time every day is the best way to create a habit.
3. If setting a time limit doesn’t work, set a goal limit.
4. Music practice quality is more important than quantity.
5. Breaking a piece down makes practice more effective.
6. Going slow makes progress fast.
7. If your student is young, be with them during practice.
9. Providing a quiet, designated practice space enables regularity and privacy.
10. Taking students to see live music can motivate them to practice.
11. Watching movies that feature musicians and songwriters is fun and inspiring.

THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON MUSIC
|
The Human Brain Is Uniquely Tuned for Musical Pitch
In the eternal search for understanding what makes us human, scientists found that our brains are more sensitive to pitch, the harmonic sounds we hear when listening to music, than our evolutionary relative the macaque monkey. The human auditory cortex is much more responsive than the monkey cortex when they looked at the relative activity between tones and equivalent noisy sounds.
"Speech and music may have fundamentally changed the way our brain processes pitch,” said Dr. Conway. “It may also help explain why it has been so hard for scientists to train monkeys to perform auditory tasks that humans find relatively effortless.”

Nuri took it to the next level at the Big Show 3.0 a few weeks ago. Not only did he lay down a smooth groove on the drums for the hit song, Sunflower, he also sang lead vocals! The first ever drumming-singing/singing-drummer at a Music Time concert, Nuri delivered a solid performance, leading a group of 7 students (with no teacher on stage) in front of an audience of roughly 300+. If you missed it live, do yourself a favor and catch it on video right here...

Mike Quigg
"I really believe in expressing yourself through music, and improvisation, and jazz!”
We welcome Mike Quigg to the Music Time teaching staff! Although I knew Mike from his mind-blowing drumming around the Oakland music scene, I was excited to get to speak with him about his musical upbringing and background.
Although many of us that end up doing music professionally have stories of a musical family and showing affinity for an instrument at a young age, Mike's anecdote about how he got started was one of my favorites:
"I was about 8 years old, we were driving around in the car, and I was in the passenger seat just going nuts - playing drums on the dashboard, banging my head all crazy. She said I turned down the music, looked over at her all seriously and said, “Mom. I need to take drum lessons.”

ANSWER:
As Billboard reports, Eminem has set the Guinness World Record for Most Words in a Hit Single, with his recent song “Rap God” totaling 1,560 words in six minutes and four seconds. For those bad at math, that breaks down to a mind-numbing 4.28 words a second.
