Dear Friend of CCSD93,
Elsie Johnson Garden Produces Veggies & Lessons for Students

Elsie Johnson Elementary School students harvested veggies from the school's garden this week! Elsie Johnson's Environmental Club had long held the goal of creating a school garden, so when they were approached by the volunteers of CareFest this spring about establishing one on the school's grounds, they jumped at the chance.
The CareFest volunteers, who donate time annually to beautify CCSD93's schools as part of a service project, provided the flower beds and soil. Students from the Environmental Club joined them on CareFest Day to put together the beds and plant vegetables and flowers provided by the school's PTA. Throughout the summer, student volunteers kept the garden watered.

This week, the students were able to experience the fruits, or in this case veggies, of their labor, harvesting jalapenos, orange and red peppers, and tomatoes. The opportunity encouraged students to develop a deeper understanding of where their food comes from and heightened their interest in vegetables because of their hands on experience farming them. With a record number of students signing up for this year's Environmental Club as a result of the garden, Elsie Johnson hopes to provide even more opportunities for students to plant, harvest, and consume their produce in future years! Special thanks to Cyndi Chapman and Margaret Uhlig, Environmental Club chairs, for their efforts in creating this unique and engaging educational experience for Elsie Johnson's students.

CCSD93 Strategic Plan Signage Popping Up at Schools - Find Out More!
At every CCSD93 school building, there are now visual reminders of our new Strategic Plan, which sets the district's vision, goals, and focus for the next five years. After a year of development, including input from more than 1,700 stakeholders, the Strategic Plan was approved by the Board of Education in June, and the visuals will help CCSD93 provide the best education possible for our community's students.

Next to the banners located in school entrances or hallways, you'll find stands with 1 page brochures that explain the 17-page plan in a more digestible way. The next time you visit one of our schools, I invite you to take one to find out more! You can always find out more by Strategic Plan at www.ccsd93.com/StrategicPlan or by tapping the Strategic Plan icon in our app.
Stratford Middle School STEM Lab & Innovation Center to Receive Award of Distinction
Stratford Middle School's STEM Lab & Innovation Center, which opened to students this school year, have earned the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB) Award of Distinction for excellence in the design of educational environments!

The spaces were designed in a collaboration between Stratford staff members, CCSD93 administrators, and architecture firm Arcon Associates. The award is another affirmation that these learning environments will help our educators to provide tremendous, relevant learning opportunities for students that will help to prepare them for the future. This is the first such award ever earned by Arcon, who will be presented the award at the November Joint Annual Conference in Chicago. Congratulations to Arcon!
