Dear Asbury Friends,
It is sometimes called "The Prayer of Saint Francis," and other times, "The Peace Prayer." For many of you, the words are familiar not because we have prayed this prayer, but because you've heard it sung at worship services.
Even though it is often times called "The Prayer of St. Francis," it was not written by Saint Francis of Assisi. Saint Francis was born in 1181 and died in 1226. Since the first time this prayer appeared was 1912, it is obvious that Saint Francis did not write it. Here is a quick history of how this prayer became known by so many people:
The prayer was sent in French to Pope Benedict XV in 1915. This was soon followed by its 1916 appearance, in Italian, in the
Osservatore Romano. Around 1920, the prayer was printed by a French Franciscan priest on the back of an image of Francis with the title "
Priere pour la paix," or, "Prayer for Peace," but without being attributed to the saint. Between the two World Wars, the prayer circulated in Europe and was translated into English.
The first translation in English that we know of appeared in 1936 in "Living Courageously," a book by Kirby Page (1890-1957), a Disciples of Christ minister. Page attributed the text to Francis of Assisi. During the Second World War and immediately after, this prayer for peace began circulating widely as the Prayer of Saint Francis and over the years has gained a worldwide popularity with people of all faiths.

Food Drive for the Asbury Community

Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 27 from 9 am to 12 pm! Asbury will be hosting a Curbside Food Pantry Drop-Off for our outdoor food pantry ministry. Drop off your non-perishable food items (cereal/bars, pasta and sauce, rice, canned items besides vegetables,
and baby food in particular need) and/or much-needed household items such as diapers, bottled water, personal hygiene items and paper towels in our back parking lot by Hager Hall.
You won't even need to leave your car! Just pop open your trunk and our volunteers

July 5 Asbury Mission Giving to the UMCOR
COVID-19 Fund, "Sheltering in Love"
UMCOR, The United Methodist Committee on Relief, was founded during World War II by courageous women and men to address an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. The goal was to do everything possible to alleviate human suffering. Today, we are facing a different type of global crisis - the relentless spread of COVID-19 throughout the world, but the goal remains the same. As members of the United Methodist Church, you are part of a legacy of undauntable human beings committed to alleviating human suffering.
True to their calling of working with vulnerable communities to help move them toward self-sufficiency,
on April 21, 2020, UMCOR announced the expansion of efforts against COVID-19 and the launch of a giving campaign, "Sheltering in Love," to assist vulnerable communities in the United States and around the world deal with the COVID-19 epidemic. Since the start of the pandemic, UMCOR has been working closely with health boards, medical professionals, disaster management coordinators and faith leaders to prevent further spread of the disease.
Through the COVID-19 Response Fund, UMCOR is releasing grants to equip partners who assist vulnerable populations throughout the United States and around the world impacted by COVID-19, including racial/ethnic and indigenous communities in the United States. Recognizing that COVID-19 is affecting racial/ethnic communities in the U.S. at a disproportionate rate, Global Ministries has also committed money from the Human Relations Day Fund and the Native American Ministries Sunday Fund to provide assistance in racial/ethnic communities in the U.S.
Grants of up to $20,000 are awarded and distributed quickly and efficiently to address pressing needs in the areas of health, food security, water, sanitation and hygiene and economic instability. As of June 10, 2020, $1,440,368 has been awarded.
Asbury's Missions Committee has designated July 5 as a day of giving to UMCOR's "Sheltering in Love" fund. The beauty of this gift is that 100% of the monies donated goes directly to the ministry. Salaries and overhead are covered out of the general church's budget. We will provide more information on the projects and other information over the coming two weeks. Ambassador Recruitment for Voter-to-Voter
 Church and Society is involved in an important effort to expand voter turnout this August and November. Some of you know that Asbury was a partner organization in the Voter-to-Voter program in 2018. This was a tremendously successful program. Of the voters targeted through this program, 82 % voted, whereas overall voter turnout was only 56%. Church and Society would like to expand Asbury's involvement, and we are seeking additional Asbury Ambassador volunteers to join our already established team. Depending on your involvement, the time commitment can be less than 4 hours total over five months. This includes one hour of training. All of this can be done from the comfort of your home. There's no cold calling or door knocking. You will be surprised at how easy it is to make a difference!
The Voter Network received a grant from the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund to expand the Voter to Voter program in UMC churches throughout Kansas. There will be a Zoom kick-off with Methodist congregations around the state on Thursday, June 25th from 10-11:30 am. YMCA of the Rockies Trip during the Summer of 2021
 A group from Asbury will once again be participating in a week-long trip during the summer of 2021 to the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, CO. We would love to have additional people join us. For those familiar with the YMCA camp, we are planning to be in one of the Central Lodges. The rooms have two queen beds and a private bathroom. The week would begin with arrival on Sunday, June 20, 2021 and conclude on Saturday morning, June 26, 2021. Six nights of lodging and three meals for each day are included in the cost. So, if you've got two in the room, the total cost for the room is $1,560 (780 x 2), with a total deposit of $312 due in the next 60 days. Children 12 & under are a reduced cost of $147. A family of four, with 2 children aged 12 and under would be $1,854 (780 x 2) plus (147 x 2).
You need to provide your own transportation to the YMCA from KC. Last year, most drove out, but some did fly out to Denver and then drove up.
There are a variety of activities available at the YMCA in Estes Park: hiking, arts and crafts, ziplining, rock wall climbing, basketball, mini golf, sightseeing or just relaxing. The last week of June, the road across the Continental Divide (Trail Ridge Road) is occasionally plowed open by then, and you can drive over to Winter Park for the day and enjoy their Alpine Slide or hike at Never Summers Ranch. In Estes Park, you can enjoy shopping and go-karts. The YMCA borders the Rocky Mountain National Park, so many hiking trails are available to you.

Some retirement places and nursing homes are allowing people to send notes, pictures, etc. to the people living there who cannot have visitors right now. I have checked with Lakeview Village and they are still allowing mail deliveries. If you are interested in doing this, please let me know and I'll send you a list of addresses for some of our Asbury folks living at Lakeview.

Asbury has a food case outside its main entrance. If you have non-perishable food, please drop some off on the case outside, or you can always order from Amazon and have it sent to the church. If you are in
need of food, or know someone else who might be in need, please let them know they can drive by and

High School: We had a wonderful virtual trip with DOOR! We learned a lot and are still finalizing plans on our two indirect service projects. We are excited to share our service projects with you in the near future!
