Letter from the President

This letter comes on the heels of the CFMA Annual Conference in Miami.  I was proud to represent the Chicago chapter along with many other chapter members.  In fact, we had the largest representation.  Way to go Chicago! Let's do it again next year in Vegas!

Conference provided unparalleled educational opportunities, time to connect with friends; old and new, and recognition of another successful year for your chapter.  Thanks to the involvement of our members and dedication of our leadership, I am happy to share that our chapter was awarded the 2018 Chairman's Excellence Award.  This award is the highest level award presented to a chapter in the achievement category of CFMA's annual Recognition Program.  Our chapter was also received Showcase recognition for our partnership with Rebuild Together Chicago and involvement in National Rebuilding Day.

This year's conference theme was Reach Out. Branch Out. Top Out.   In the coming year I encourage each of your to Reach Out, meet and build relationships with your fellow CFMA members.  Attend networking events like our upcoming Summer Social and Golf Outing, or consider joining one of our committees.  Next, Branch Out and expand your knowledge.  Our chapter offers something for everyone through a variety of industry-specific programming.  Take a moment now to mark your calendar for the Midwest Regional Conference on September 23-24.  You won't want to miss this dynamic educational opportunity!  Finally, Top Out - a term we are all familiar with in the construction industry. What is your professional Top Out goal this year? Perhaps to become a CCIFP? As our chapter membership continues to grow, so do the opportunities for new relationships, education and leadership roles.  I hope you will make CFMA a part of your Top Out plan.

I, along with members of our leadership team, left the 2018 Annual Conference with some new ideas to implement.  I look forward to working with the board and our committee chairs to share these ideas so our chapter may continue to provide value and opportunity to each of our members.

Integrating Disparate CRE Software Systems: The Basics
By Dom Pernai, President, Cornerstone Solutions

At its core, the goal of every technology partner within the construction and real estate space is to develop solutions that serve to boost efficiency, productivity and growth across all levels of a construction business. And there's no denying that the whole CRE universe is and has been in the midst of an enduring technological renaissance for years, if not decades. This is a revolution that has systematically taken hold in nearly all facets of construction organizations - both multi-entity and small - to profoundly impact and streamline their daily operations. From project management, customer relationship management and AP automation to field operations, time tracking and industry-specific accounting software, key decision makers in the construction and real estate market have witnessed a prolific introduction to and adoption of new technologies in their industry - and there have been no signs that that trend will be slowing any time soon.

However, what can become a clear pitfall to this rapid and widespread proliferation of new technologies and solutions occurs when disparate systems aren't properly integrated. Without full adoption and integration of a new technology, businesses may find themselves reverting back to the manual methods and endless string of spreadsheets, emails and CSV documents that they were trying to avoid in the first place.  Click to continue reading
