Washington New Addition To Gateway Wall Of Fame

John Washington is seldom speechless.
The longtime chairman of the Gateway Community Action Partnership Board of Directors is used to, and accomplished, at speaking in public. His is organized, on task and always has something positive to say. He is devout and he is devoted to the agency's mission.
John Washington was speechless on May 23. At the conclusion of the board meeting, Washington was at a loss for words.
He was honored by the agency for his years of service by having his nameplate added to the Gateway Wall of Fame, which is located in the lobby of the administrative offices at 110 Cohansey St., Bridgeton.
An emotional Washington said very little as President & CEO Albert B. Kelly, CCAP spoke of Washington's steadfast leadership of the board since taking over as chair in 2005 for the late Dr. Frank D. Brigio, M.D., whose nameplate also adorns the Wall of Fame. He just smiled and worked to keep his emotions in check.
"Look at that ... John's speechless, said fellow board member Joe L. Kidd, who is also a member of the Wall of Fame. "He's never speechless!"
When he asked to say a few words, Washington, who is the mayor of Penns Grove and has served an unexpired term on the Gateway board since it was reorganized in 1994, in fact said just a few words.
"I really don't know what to say. I am so honored. So overwhelmed and so thankful. It is a honor to be part of this great organization, to serve with so many fine people on this board," Washington said. "I am speechless."
Washington's nameplate joins Brigio, Kidd and two other former Gateway board members, Curtis Edwards and Carol Musso, on the agency's prestigious Wall of Fame.
The long and hearty round of applause that followed said everything John Washington didn't on the rare occasion when he was speechless.

Gateway's Family Success Centers Presenting Sessions On ADHD And ADD
|
The Greater Bridgeton Area Family Success Center, the Holly City Family Success Center and the Salem Family Success Center are collaborating to host a series of sessions on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).
The keynote speaker for the orientation session in May was Eva M. O'Malley, a Certified Parent to Parent instructor, who shared her personal story as a mother of a child with ADHD.
The sessions are funded through a grant from CGS Family Partnership, Inc.

Gateway's Head Start Male Initiative Program Has Fun At AC Blackjacks Game

Gateway's Head Start Male Initiative program took in an Arena League Football game - Atlantic City Blackjacks against the Albany Empire - at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall recently. The adults and children thoroughly enjoyed the fast-paced and exciting game. More importantly, it was another way the Male Initiative Program encourages and promotes the bonding of our Head Start children with their fathers.

Edward Bethea, Executive Vice President and COO, served as the event's guest speaker. Bethea spoke with attendees about health and nutrition, including the importance of taking care of your body and your community. |

Spring Gardens Senior Housing Complex hosted its second annual Seniors with Style Fashion Show. Residents, gathered with family and friends, watched fellow residents show off their spring fashions. The fashion show is designed to give seniors self-confidence and a chance to have fun. Ms. Classia Brown of our Alzheimer's Adult Daycare Program was crowned winner of this year's event.

The theme of Green's message to the students was "Yes You Can ... Be What You Want To Be." Green was recently inducted into the Bridgeton High School Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame. |

Which Mill Creek Urban Farm Greenhouse Tomatoes Are The Best? Gateway Decides!

Gateway's Mill Creek Urban Farm is raising five varieties of greenhouse tomatoes this year: Bigdena, Foronti, Cobra, Marbonne and Geronimo. Gateway held a taste test among staff to see which was the best. The results:

Marbonne and Bigdena were a tie with an average rating of 3.6 out of 5.
Cobra and Foronti also tied with an average of 3.1 out of 5.
And Geronimo was the lowest with a rating of 3.0.
Marbonne had the highest number of "excellent" ratings, but also the highest number of "fair" ratings.
And Cobra had the highest number of "very good" ratings.

Gateway Participating In 2019 Summer Food Service Program
|
Gateway Community Action Partnership will be participating in the 2019 Summer Food Service Program from July 1 through August 31.
The Summer Food Service Program is a federal program of the Food and Nutrition Services, United States Department of Agriculture. This program provides all children 18 years of age and under with the same free meal in accordance with a menu approved by the state agency.
In accordance with Federal civil rights law and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) civil rights regulations and policies, the USDA, its Agencies, offices, and employees, and institutions participating in or administering USDA programs are prohibited from discriminating based on race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, and reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity in any program or activity conducted or funded by USDA.
Persons with disabilities who require alternative means of communication for program information (e.g. Braille, large print, audiotape, American Sign Language, etc.), should contact the Agency (State or local) where they applied for benefits. Individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech disabilities may contact USDA through the Federal Relay Service at (800) 877-8339. Internet Essentials
, a program offered by Comcast, gives income-eligible families access to the Internet for $9.95 a month with no activation fee, equipment fees or price increases. Having the Internet enables children to do homework, type reports or do research and enables the parents to e-mail teachers as well as look for jobs, pay bills or find doctors.
Gateway Community Action Partnership is working with Comcast to inform families of the program. Internet Essentials is available to households that have children eligible to participate in the National School Lunch Program or if they receive HUD housing assistance. They must reside in a Comcast service area and must not have subscribed to Comcast Internet in the last 90 days or have overdue Comcast bills. Also, low-cost computers are being offered for $149.99 and free training is accessible if needed. To get more information or to sign up, visit www.internetessentials.com or call 1-855-846-8376. ... Gateway operates the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children (WIC) in Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Atlantic and Salem counties.
