 ith great pleasure and privilege that I introduce myself and welcome you all to a new year of SLA activities. I have great expectations for a vibrant, engaging, and rich year for libraries in Saskatchewan.

rking through the business of the organization, dreaming for the future, and socializing over good food.
The coming year will be filled with new challenges and opportunities for self-assessment as an organization. SLA's fortunate participation in the Lifecycles Capacity Building Program will give our Association an advantage to the creation of a new Strategic Plan (2018-2021) and assist with an organization-wide assessment of our programs.
A little bit about me...
I spend a lot of time reading (surprise) - mostly fiction, but also the occasional opinion piece on current events or practical theology. I also love to tend flowers and plants. I live in a condo and have the privilege of tending to herbs, tomatoes and flowers on my deck in the warmer months, and house plants of tropical varieties inside during the winter months.
I very much look forward to collaborating with all of you over the next year and I am grateful for your affirmation of my election. May we all have a rich and fruitful year in our Saskatchewan libraries!

Executive Directors Report - July 2018
June has been an interesting month of reflection and planning for the year ahead. The board change over meeting was held June 19 followed by the first meeting of the 2018-19 Board of Directors held on June 20, 2018. Members of the 2018 -19 Board may be found on

Conference 2018 Wrap up
The Conference Evaluation Report was completed in June. Many thanks to those delegates that attended for their comments. It is important that we learn from each conference and take that information into planning for the next conference. In addition to the evaluation reports we are gathering information from selected members to ensure we have broad input into planning for the May 2019 conference. The Evaluation Report is
attached for your information.

The Saskatchewan Library Association (SLA) is pleased to accept applications for the Maureen Woods Education Bursary. This bursary was made possible with the generous donation from the Saskatchewan Provincial Library and Literacy Office, Saskatchewan Ministry of Education and through the efforts of the Multitype Library Board and SLA. The bursary was established to promote the continued growth of professional librarianship in the province of Saskatchewan. The bursary is administered by the Saskatchewan Library Association. SLA is offering a single bursary in the amount of $5,000.Deadline for applications is October 30, 2018.

Continuing Educatiion Grants:
Applications for Continuing Education Grants Due August 15, 2018
Have a great idea for a workshop for library staff? Interested in attending a conference, workshop, or professional development opportunity? SLA offers Continuing Education (CE) grants to provide and support relevant educational opportunities for its members. Applications for CE category one and two grants are now being accepted:
- Grant to an individual for attendance to any continuing education opportunity (conference, workshop, etc.).
- Grant to an individual or institution for organization and promotion of a continuing education opportunity (conference, workshop, etc.).
All applications are due by August 15th, 2018. Details are available on the website. Please send all applications to the SLA Executive Director: [email protected]
Grants will not be awarded if suitable candidates do not apply. Preference will be given to those who have not had a grant before.

Interested in hosting the Saskatchewan Libraries 2020 Conference?
Is your community or institution eager to host an upcoming conference? This is your opportunity to host the 2020 Saskatchewan Library Association's annual conference! Interested locations should submit a proposal as soon as possible, and include a chair or co-chairs for the 2020 Conference Planning Committee (CPC). SLA offers a mentoring opportunity for the chair(s) to attend all upcoming 2019 Conference Planning Executive Team teleconferences. This group consists of SLA's executive director, president, 2019 CPC chair, and 2019 CPC program chair. Details about the conference request for proposals are here and also available in SLA's CPC Handbook.
Summer Socials Save the Date - August 22, 2018
Summer Socials will be organized for Regina and Saskatoon and held on August 22, 2018. The venues TBD will be announced in the August 1 SLAte. Please note that locations in addition to Regina and Saskatoon may choose to organize socials and we are pleased to publicize your information. Socials are a great opportunity to network, share information and socialize!

Planning for Conference 2019: Recruiting Committee members
The conference executive committee will begin meeting at the end of August and continue meeting monthly until the end of April 2019. Committee Chairs and members will meet less frequently and the work is entirely dependent on the roles that you volunteer for. For example, the program committee meets frequently between October and January, but after that, the majority of their work is done. Any of these positions can have one or two chairs.
The roles that need to be filled include:

- 2020 Conference Committee Chair
Committee Chairs and Members:
- Volunteer Chair -
- Program Committee - (potentially 8 members)
I am hoping to have the majority of the committees in place by July 10, and our first meetings scheduled by the end of August.
Please respond to me if you are interested (or not) in an executive position or being a committee member by July 6th. If you are interested in volunteering at the conference but not as part of a committee, can you please let me know that as well.

Early Life: I grew up on a dairy farm north of Toronto. I have two older sisters and one younger brother. In 1978 I married Robert and we began our life journey together. June 17th marks our 40th wedding anniversary.
Professional career and activities: My first career was as a Cosmetologist. I worked in this profession for 30 years and loved every minute of that ever- changing field. I worked with others, owned my own shop, apprenticed staff, and taught for a community college.In 2002 I was given the opportunity to begin my second career. I started working in a School Library in La Ronge. I took my classes from SAIT online, and developed my passion for helping every child to be excited about reading. In 2005 I moved to Prince Albert where I worked for Saskatchewan Rivers School Division for the next 12 years.In the fall of 2017 I accepted a Library position once again with Northern Lights School Division. I am thrilled to be back in "the north", living at our cabin on the lake, and working at Gordon Denny Community School with the most loving students I have ever met.I feel so fortunate to have had two careers that I totally love

New area opens at Regina's Mamaweyatitan Centre
The Heart of the Site at, an outdoor sanctuary and gathering space, was unveiled at a Regina high school.The Heart of the Site, a sanctuary and gathering space, was unveiled at the mâmawêyatitân Centre Friday morning.Mosaic Company offered $100,000 in funding to build the site.Many in attendance expressed pleasure with the site, including those attending and working at the centre."It's a place of beauty and you see all this growth," said Noel Starblanket, an Elder in Residence there. "Nice natural things, that really means a lot."
"It's not just a versatile outdoor space," Jeff Barber, Chair of the Mamaweyatitan Centre, said. "It's also a tangible link to Indigenous cultural traditions and teachings that are a vital part of this community and the work taking place at this facility."
- SLA Representative - Saskatchewan Book Awards
SLA is recruiting a member to represent the organization on the Board of Directors for Saskatchewan Book Awards. The SLA Representative to the Saskatchewan Book Awards takes part in monthly meetings of the SBA Board (either by teleconference or in person). In 2017-2018 the Board assisted with fundraising efforts, and provided direction to the SBA's Executive Director, and assisted with the annual Saskatchewan Book Awards Ceremony and related activities. Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets
The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
