Our work isn't done. That was the message that struck me at the Indiana Recycling Coalition's 29th Annual Conference in Indianapolis. I started in this business the same year the IRC was formed. In the intervening years, I've seen many changes in packaging types, collection systems, and waste streams. As an industry, we have created an amazing brand. As one of the speakers noted:
"'Reduce, reuse, recycle' is the most recognizable environmental
slogan in the country.
Working together, we did that."
But we have more to do. Consumer packaging and products are constantly evolving, which means continuing to communicate "what, when, where, why, and how" is just as important as ever. Environmental education is not a one-and-done campaign, but an ongoing and growing dialogue. We will not succeed in capturing more and better recyclables, reducing food and other unneccessary waste, or repurposing and reusing more and different materials without reaching people with the right messages at the right times.

Finally, a note of congratulations to Caroline Sausser, daughter of Julanne Sausser, our marketing communications manager. Caroline recently received the Hoosier Chapter of SWANA 2018 College Scholarship. For more on Caroline and the award, check out our blog.
Keep Recycling!
