Our work isn't done. That was the message that struck me at the Indiana Recycling Coalition's 29th Annual Conference in Indianapolis. I started in this business the same year the IRC was formed. In the intervening years, I've seen many changes in packaging types, collection systems, and waste streams. As an industry, we have created an amazing brand. As one of the speakers noted:

"'Reduce, reuse, recycle' is the most recognizable environmental
slogan in the country.  Working together, we did that."

But we have more to do. Consumer packaging and products are constantly evolving, which means continuing to communicate "what, when, where, why, and how" is just as important as ever. Environmental education is not a one-and-done campaign, but an ongoing and growing dialogue. We will not succeed in capturing more and better recyclables, reducing food and other unneccessary waste, or repurposing and reusing more and different materials without reaching people with the right messages at the right times.  Read what other Eco Partners staff members took away from the IRC conference below.

Finally, a note of congratulations to Caroline Sausser, daughter of Julanne Sausser, our marketing communications manager. Caroline recently received the Hoosier Chapter of SWANA 2018 College Scholarship. For more on Caroline and the award, check out our blog.

We look foward to spending time with our clients and partners at annual conferences around the country. Here are some thoughts from our staff about this year's Indiana Recycling Coalition Conference in Indianapolis.

From Margot Gibson, staff writer: Meeting all of our Indiana clients was, without a doubt, the highlight of the IRC conference for me. As the newest addition to the Eco Partners writing staff, I am still in the process of matching clients' names with their unique needs and personalities. Heartfelt thanks to all of our clients for making me feel welcome! As always, the conference seminars offered valuable industry insight and options for addressing complex problems. The networking opportunities and generous and frequent food and drink offerings were equally appreciated.

From Gary Roe, vice president: The conference's opening reception on Monday night provided an opportunity to catch up with clients, colleagues, and old friends in a relaxed atmosphere. The fresh and clever hors d'oeuvres at Public Greens and the excellent ice cream at Brics were enjoyed in the festive atmosphere created by the steady stream of people passing by on the adjacent Monon Trail...Read on...

From Julanne Sausser, marketing communications manager:
I am proud to be both a founding member of the Indiana Recycling Coalition and to have served on its first board of directors. I'm also grateful to continue to be a part of this commited, hardworking organization.

Back in 1989, I worked with a fellow IRC volunteer to scout locations for the very first IRC conference held in April 1990 and helped to plan the event. We have come quite a way from the early years as a grassroots organization run by volunteers!...  Read on in this week's blog post.
