June 2019
Four Years of Building a Better New York
June marks the beginning of
Dr. Gerrard P. Bushell’s fifth year
as DASNY President & CEO. Delivering change has and continues to be the focus of his tenure. “We have successfully implemented numerous internal adjustments to make our processes faster and more efficient, while effectively managing risk,” says Dr. Bushell. “We have established a culture of continuous improvement, to better serve our clients. By doing so, we further DASNY's public service mission and help make New York's communities stronger, sustainable, and more resilient.” DASNY’s efforts continue to produce impressive results. DASNY is:

  • Leading the Nation: The Bond Buyer and Thomson Reuters have once again recognized DASNY's leadership in the bond market as the nation's top municipal bond issuer. In Fiscal Year 2019, DASNY broke its financing record by closing approximately $8.7 billion in bond issues.

  • Expanding its Footprint: The City University of New York (CUNY), DASNY's largest partner, is increasingly relying on DASNY to deliver and DASNY has allocated additional resources to meet this challenge. We now have more than 300 active CUNY projects with a construction value of more than $1.5 billion.

  • Reducing the State's Carbon Emissions: DASNY is at the forefront of Governor Cuomo's bold Reforming the Energy Vision agenda to make the state's energy 100 percent carbon free by 2040 by expanding DASNY’s energy performance contracting offerings. DASNY's new program enables clients to pay for upgrades to their facilities with the energy savings the upgrades generate.

  • Strengthening DASNY's Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: To strengthen our commitment to diversity and inclusion, DASNY continues to integrate its Procurement Unit and Opportunity Programs Group, to ensure Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE) participation is a centerpiece in DASNY’s contracting process.

DASNY plays a crucial role in making New York a better place to live, work,
and learn. Over the next year, we will continue to push forward, seeking out
new efficiencies and enhancements to provide the absolute best services
to our clients.
Dr. Bushell Named to REDI Committee, Helping
Communities Impacted by Lake Ontario Flooding
In response to widespread flood damage caused by historically high water levels in Lake Ontario, Governor Andrew Cuomo, along with more than 250 local and state officials, including DASNY President & CEO Gerrard P. Bushell, have joined the effort to help those in need.

Dr. Bushell has been named to the Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development Initiative (REDI) commission, which stood alongside Governor Cuomo on June 10 as he announced up to $300 million in funding available for impacted communities.

"DASNY is proud to contribute to Governor Cuomo's REDI initiative and stands ready to assist the local communities impacted by rising water levels along Lake Ontario and the Saint Lawrence River," said Dr. Bushell. "By helping these regions build back stronger and smarter, we will make certain they can meet their future emergency needs and ensure long-term economic success."

Additionally, the Governor deployed 100 National Guard for sandbagging missions. You can learn more about the ongoing efforts on the Governor's website .

MacKenzie Hall Project Receives Recognition
DASNY’s work in Western New York Region is receiving accolades.

The renovation of Alfred State’s MacKenzie Complex has been named by Buffalo Business First as a “Brick By Brick” Collegiate award-winner.

DASNY has teamed with Mach Architecture, p.c., and subcontractor Pathfinder Engineers & Architects, LLP and for the project – for which an $18 million second phase is currently underway. There, DASNY is incorporating many sustainable elements as the South and East Wings of the largest residence hall complex on campus are being renovated. The complex houses 1,100 students.

The award-winning Phase 1 work included the creation of a large student commons featuring a 35-foot-tall atrium with water features, a monumental stair, café, fitness center, laundry facilities, lounge and study areas as well as prototypes for the towers and rowhouses. MacKenzie now serves as a vibrant hub of the campus community. The project has transformed the least desired housing option into one of the most desired housing options on Alfred’s campus.

Bids will be received this fall for a $14 million third phase.

“This project has been a real honor for the Mach Team to be a part of the collective team,” said Brian D. Kelley, Mach Architecture, p.c. President. “We greatly appreciate the dedication of so many people from DASNY and Alfred State that allowed us to help deliver a project that will allow the college to continue to successfully recruit and retain future students and that this building impacts the lives of students in a positive way.”

well-received and students have already moved into the 132-bed section
of the residence hall.
DASNY Helps UHSH Acquire $10.1 Million
in State-of-the-Art Equipment
Through DASNY’s Tax-Exempt Equipment Leasing Program (TELP), hospitals, universities, and other not-for-profit institutions have access to DASNY’s tax-exempt financing to obtain lower interest rates for capital equipment leases.

United Health Services Hospitals, Inc. (UHSH) of Binghamton closed on a $10.1 million transaction . The transaction authorizes UHSH to acquire state-of-the-art equipment that will enhance patient care. This includes a surgical robot that enables doctors to perform complex procedures with more precision, flexibility, and control, as well as electrocardiographs (EKG), surgical instruments, and ventilators.

Over the past two years, DASNY and our health care clients executed more than $170 million in low-cost leases through TELP. These financings give health care providers like UHSH the flexibility and savings they need to acquire technically advanced equipment and deliver the best possible care to their patients.
