June 2018
Dear friends and colleagues,

I would like to congratulate every member of our faculty and staff as we conclude another successful academic year. This year, we were able to send over 2,100 students into the workforce with greater skills and knowledge that will be used to further their education and fuel our economy in the years to come.

For most students, the opportunity to gain an associate’s degree or career certificate is a life-changing experience, one that our colleges, Crafton Hills College and San Bernardino Valley College, have the honor of providing. Our graduates now have the tools and skills necessary to help them achieve the educational and career goals of their dreams. As our students and graduates aspire to do more, so do we.

For nearly 100 years, the San Bernardino Community College District has delivered a quality education to our local community. Our mission is grounded by the belief that the greater service we provide to our students, the greater service these students can provide to our economy and our communities. It’s this ripple effect that inspires us to continue providing the highest quality education with the knowledge that there will always be more we can accomplish.

I would like to thank the faculty and staff of SBCCD for continuing to provide excellent service, teamwork, and leadership, as you always have, as we proceed into the next academic year. As always, I look forward to continuing this conversation. Please email your thoughts and ideas to me at bbaron@sbccd.edu . Have a great summer!

Onward,
Bruce

TOMORROW'S WORKFORCE

New generation explores the future of advanced manufacturing: 3D printing
The future of advanced manufacturing looks bright and fun. Recently, the third grade class from E. Neil Roberts Elementary came to our very first educational tour of the brand new MakerSpace at SBCCD. Young students got to check out what the MakerSpace has to offer as well as make something special for Mother's Day by creating 3D printed items, gifts, and decorating mugs.
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Alumni Activism: Joshua Bell
At an early stage, you can tell someone has a knack for leadership and making change. Meet San Bernardino Valley College alumnus Joshua Bell. From being a student and volunteer for SBVC to working for Assemblywoman Eloise Gomez Reyes and non-profit organizations, Bell has laid the foundation for a career that answers his calling and purpose of serving others.
CONSERVATION MATTERS

SBCCD colleges recognized for leaderships in energy conservation
The San Bernardino Community College District has won the Best Practices award in Large Scale Planning for sustainability! This award, presented by the 2018 California Higher Education Sustainability Conference, was given to SBCCD for its long-term commitment and leadership in energy conservation and sustainability during the construction of large scale projects at Crafton Hills College and San Bernardino Valley College.
FOR THE COMMUNITY

SBCCD hosts community for job opportunities, local services
Community partners gathered to SBCCD's district campus to support goodwill, provide information, and offer employment opportunities with neighboring community members. To promote healthier partnerships and strong relationships, SBCCD hosted this event as open-invitation where any individual could attend, listen to music, enjoy free food, and learn about what organizations exist in our community and what they do.
GOOD TO KNOW

Over 100 classes you could take with zero textbook costs
Everyone knows that high textbook costs hinders students success by demotivating them to take the class or discouraging from buying the materials necessary to understand the material. SBVC is providing a solution to students by offering Open Educational Resource (OER) degree programs in which students are never asked to purchase commercial resources. By meeting certain criteria and adhering to certain rules, SBVC may be one of the first catalysts that help students succeed by changing the way students learn.
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Crafton Hills College helped him become one of the rescuers
It takes years of training and drive to become ready for paramedic testing and certification. Nolan Newkirk has been training his whole life. After experiencing a terrible car crash as a child, Nolan grew up knowing that in his heart, saving people from disastrous events was what he was born to do. Newkirk among other EMT students chose Crafton Hills College as the bridge to connect them to the future careers that would make a difference and save lives.
EVERYONE COUNTS

SBCCD to host regional convening to prepare San Bernardino for the Census
The information the census collects helps determine how more than $675 billion of federal funding is distributed to states and communities each year. To ensure everyone who lives in San Bernardino County gets counted, the public is invited on Thursday, June 28 at  San Bernardino Valley College  for a regional convening to discuss community outreach strategies and more.
