Tuesday, June 16

I’ve never heard someone say, “this food tastes terrible, so I thought I’d see if you wanted some.” That is not how we operate. We share what we like. We pass along our favorite recipes. For the past few days this daily devotion, and the online sermon for Sunday, June 14, have revolved around Jesus’ words “you will be my witnesses.” It would be very difficult to be a witness for Jesus Christ, if we didn’t like Jesus Christ. It would be hard to talk about God’s love if we did not know the love of God. When the Psalm writer states: “Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him.” (Psalm 34:8) he is doing so as one who knows how good it is to be in a relationship with God.

Thus, today as we continue to explore the calling to be a witness for Jesus, it seems appropriate to remember how good God has been to us. Think of it as tasting, once again, the goodness of a wonderful recipe.

I will praise the Lord at all times.
    I will constantly speak his praises.
I will boast only in the Lord;
    let all who are helpless take heart.
Come, let us tell of the Lord’s greatness;
    let us exalt his name together.
I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me.
    He freed me from all my fears.
Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy;
    no shadow of shame will darken their faces.
In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened;
    he saved me from all my troubles.
For the angel of the Lord is a guard;
    he surrounds and defends all who fear him.
8 Taste and see that the Lord is good.
  Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him.” (Psalm 34:1-8)

Take a moment and review these words from God’s word. Which word or phrase is especially meaningful for you today? Use that word or phrase as the basis of a prayer of gratitude for all God has done for you.
