Micah Ali
(BS '01)
was re-elected chair of the National School Board Association's Council of Urban Boards of Education. Ali currently serves as president of the Compton Unified School District Board of Trustees. During his tenure at CUSD he, along with the board and superintendent, led the dramatic turnaround in the district, eradicating an over $30 million deficit, initiating valuable partnerships with industry giants such as Apple, Google and Capitol Records; and implementing instructional improvements that have resulted in increased achievement scores and a high school graduation rate that is approaching 90%.

James Brown
(MA '95)
was promoted to dean of social science and education at Volunteer State Community College in Tennessee. Brown retired from the Los Angeles Police Department in 2006 after serving 33 years as an officer and detective.

Clarence Gilyard, Jr.
(BA '89)
has been circling the news as this year marks the 25th Anniversary for the television series, “Walker, Texas Ranger”. The show featured Gilyard, who appeared alongside martial arts actor, Chuck Norris, through all 8 seasons after the success of the pilot episodes from 1993.

Ted Ross
(MBA '05)
was named CIO of the Year at the 2018 Los Angeles Business Journal CTO Awards. Ross serves as chief information officer for the City of Los Angeles, where he manages LA’s Information Technology Agency (ITA).

Lawrence Clark
(MBA '76)
passed away May 2, 2018, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Clark is the former mayor of Rancho Palos Verdes and a former California State Coastal Commissioner. During his tenure on the Rancho Palos Verdes City Council, he spearheaded term limits and backed a tax to rebuild the city’s storm drain network. He also spent 40 years working for the federal government in the Air Force, Department of Defense, National Reconnaissance Office, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
