Ayo!'s Latest Project Aims to Support One of Yerevan's Oldest Neighborhoods
The Fund for Armenian Relief's Armenian National Science and Education Fund (ANSEF) recently held its yearly awards ceremony at the National Academy of Science in Yerevan.
This year 88 scientists in 27 separate research groups-representing the fields of biology, biotech, chemistry, physics, astronomy, agriculture, archeology, and history, among others-will begin or continue research with the help of an ANSEF grant.
"ANSEF is a unique diaspora initiative," said Eduard Karapetyan, of FAR's Education and Science Program, during the awards ceremony. "It gives scientists-especially young scientists-a chance to acquire research experience and advance their innovative ideas."
In its 19 years of existence, ANSEF has awarded 488 grants to 1,735 scientists-an investment in excess of $2.4 million in Armenia's scientific disciplines. That support has fueled a community of researchers who have taken the lead in advocating for further scientific development in Armenia.

The Feast of Holy Etchmiadzin
On Sunday, June 23, the Armenian Church will celebrate the Feast of the Catholic Church of Holy Etchmiadzin (canonically known as Don Sourp Etchmiadzini Gatoghiguh Yegeghetzin).
The cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin was built in A.D. 303, after St. Gregory the Illuminator had a vision in which Christ struck the ground with a golden hammer and instructed Gregory to erect a church on the site.
The feast day commemorates the founding of the Universal Church (the idea that there was one church, founded by Jesus Christ and spread by the Apostles) and St. Gregory's vision. It follows the Feast of St. Gregory the Enlightener (his deliverance from the pit), which will be observed on Saturday, June 22.
On Sunday, all parishes in the Eastern Diocese will conduct the "Special Prayer for the Catholicos and the Feast of Holy Etchmiadzin."

Հայոց եկեղեցու մեծ տոներից է Սբ. Գրիգոր Լուսավորչի տեսիլքով Կաթողիկե Սբ. Էջմիածնի հիմնադրման տոնը: Ըստ ավանդության՝ Խոր Վիրապի բանտարկությունից դուրս գալուց հետո Սբ. Գրիգոր Լուսավորիչը տեսնում է նշանավոր տեսիլքը, ուր Միածինը, ողողված հրաշափառ լույսով, իջնում է երկնքից եւ ոսկե ուռով զարկում Սանդարամետի գետնափոր մեհյանը` ցույց տալով այն տեղը, ուր պետք է կառուցվեր հայոց սուրբ հավատի տաճարը: Այստեղից էլ առաջացել է «Էջմիածին» անունը, այսինքն` էջ՝ (գրաբար) իջավ Միածինը:
Սբ. Գրիգոր Լուսավորիչն իր տեսիլքը պատմում է հայոց Տրդատ թագավորին: Արքայի հովանավորությամբ կառուցվում է Սբ. Էջմիածնի Աստվածածնին նվիրված Կաթողիկե Մայր Տաճարը: Քրիստոսի իջման տեղում էլ կառուցվում է Իջման Սբ. Սեղանը: Էջմիածնի կառուցման աշխատանքներին ժողովրդի հետ մասնակցել են նաեւ Տրդատ թագավորը եւ Աշխեն թագուհին: Ըստ Մաղաքիա պատրիարք Օրմանյանի Ծիսական բառարանի՝ «կաթողիկե» նշանակում է աթոռանիստ մայր եկեղեցի, եւ այս անունը հատուկ տրվել է Էջմիածնի Մայր տաճարին:
Սակայն մեկ այլ իմաստով կաթողիկե են անվանել գմբեթ ունեցող բոլոր եկեղեցիներն ընդհանրապես, իսկ աստվածաբանության մեջ այդ անվանումը համարվում է եկեղեցու ընդհանրականության խորհրդապատկերը: Այս երեք իմաստներն էլ համապատասխանում են Էջմիածնի Մայր Տաճարին, քանի որ այն աթոռանիստ եկեղեցի է, գմբեթավոր եւ ընդհանրական է բոլոր հավատացյալների համար: Կաթողիկե Սբ. Էջմիածնի տոնը նշվում է Սբ. Զատիկից 64 օր հետո կամ Հոգեգալստյան կիրակիին հաջորդող երկրորդ կիրակին: Տոնի օրը մատուցվում է Սբ. Պատարագ, իսկ ժամերգությունների ընթացքում այլ շարականների հետ երգվում է նաեւ նշանավոր «Էջ Միածինն ի Հօրէ» շարականը, որը գրել է 8-րդ դարի կաթողիկոս Սահակ Ձորափորեցին: Շարականը Գրիգոր Լուսավորչի տեսիլքի եւ տաճարի կառուցման մասին է:

Shnorhali School End of Year Hantess, Graduation and Performances
The St. Mary Shnorhali School held it's year-end Hantess on two separate joyous occasions. On
June 2nd
, a ceremony was held for the graduating class followed by a joint performance "Hayots Lezoon" by the students of three grades together (Tikin Marta', Tikin Anushik, and Tikin Maro classes). The play was written and directed by Mrs. Edita Kalaijyan. The Western Armenian class, led by Armen and Nareg Boghosian, also performed beautiful violin solos.
The Shnorhali School congratulates all of it's graduates of the Armenian School as well as students who received diplomas denoting their graduation from the Diocesan Christian education program:

Young Pilgrims Return from the Holy Land
Twenty-three young adults from across the Eastern Diocese embarked on a 10-day tour of the Holy Land this month, as part of the Diocese's annual Young Adult Pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
Traveling June 4-13, the group visited holy sites and locales out of biblical history, like Bethlehem, the Sea of Galilee, Nazareth, Mt. Tabor, and the Jordan River. The young pilgrims were also awakened to the vital role Armenians have played in the story of the Holy Land, embodied in the centuries-old Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem.
The group was led by the Rev. Fr. Hovsep Karapetyan, pastor of the St. Mary Church of Washington, DC, assisted by Arpi Nakashian from the Diocese.
"This pilgrimage is designed to deepen a young adult's Armenian Christian identity as they follow in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ," said Arpi, who is herself a native of Jerusalem. "It's an unforgettable experience to be immersed in the sacred history of our own people, who have lived in the Holy Land for centuries."
Having now returned as Mahdesis-literally "one who has viewed death," the age-old Armenian term for a Holy Land pilgrim-the young adults are expected to share their experiences in their respective parishes across the Diocese.

Russian-Armenian Teenager Thrills the Van Cliburn Competition
"When I play," said concert pianist Eva Gevorgyan, "I hope people can hear words which I would never say in my real life."
Miss Gevorgyan, a Russian-Armenian 15-year-old who lives with her family in Moscow, has been playing piano since the age of three, and currently studies at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Moscow State University. Though fairly new to the international festival scene, she has already become a sensation by winning competitions in Russia, Europe, and Armenia.
From May 31 through June 8, she thrilled American audiences by her performances in the 2019 Cliburn International Junior Piano Competition in Dallas, TX. Starting in an international field of 23 top-ranked pianists, aged 13-17, Eva emerged as one of the three finalists, and took the $10,000 second prize as well as the $500 Press Award. Australia's Shuan Hern Lee (age 16) won the $15,000 first prize, with South Korea's JiWon Yang (17) winning the $5,000 third prize.
While a native of Russia, Eva was issued citizenship by the Republic of Armenia earlier this year, and represented both countries in the competition. For her performance in the final round, Eva played the exquisite Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini by Sergei Rachmaninoff,

Her visit to Dallas caught the attention of the local Armenian community, leading parishioners of the city's St. Sarkis Church to follow the Cliburn competition and join the audience at Meyerson Concert Hall, in support of Eva and her mother Ksenia. St. Sarkis has a strong affiliation with the musical arts, and its organist Hasmik Virabyan had a chance to meet with Eva, and offer a comment on her grace and poise: "Our girl made us so proud with her presence and exceptional skills."
