Greetings, LSC-Houston North Community Partners!
Dear Community Partners –

I hope each of you are doing well. In this edition of the newsletter, we want to highlight several or our outreach efforts as well as our plans for returning to some form of normalcy this fall . As you may have seen, many school districts and higher education institutions are adjusting their fall calendars and/or schedules to protect students from a possible spread of COVID-19. At Lone Star College-Houston North, we are also taking several precautions as noted below.

Fall Schedules
We are offering classes in four formats this fall.
  • Traditional Online – Online courses not tied to a specific meeting schedule.
  • Online Synchronous – Online courses that have set meeting times via video conferencing.
  • Hybrid – Courses that are a mixture of face-to-face and online. For these courses, students would come to the campus for no more than twice per week.
  • Traditional Face-to-Face – Classes that meet up to four days per week.

For the most part, 80% of our course offerings will either be online or hybrid. We are also building our weekend program that will allow students to earn a degree by just attending on Saturdays.

CDC-Based Classroom Design
For the classes that will meet in person, class sizes will be reduced to no more than 10-12 students. Desks and work-spaces are currently being arranged to allow for appropriate social distancing protocols.

Special Precautions
The college is also taking several steps to protect students including:
  • Checking temperatures of entrants into the buildings;
  • Providing masks and other appropriate PPE for all students, faculty and staff;
  • Installing sneeze guards at student service stations;
  • Setting up health check stations that will allow students to check their own temperature or get extra PPE supplies;
  • Placing sanitizer throughout the building.

As a college, we exist to service students and the community. Therefore, we are taking the responsibility of providing a safe environment very seriously. As a colleague once stated, the hardest part of college should be the coursework. As higher education institutions, it is important that we do our parts to help address all other issues.

Lone Star College-Houston North to offer On-Site Classes in the Fall

Lone Star College-Houston North is planning to open the Fairbanks, Greenspoint, and Victory locations this fall for limited face-to-face classes.

As of right now, approximately 20% of classes will be offered in a traditional 4-day week face-to-face format, 30% all online, and 50% in a hybrid format (mixture of online and face-to-face).

All on-campus classes will have smaller class sizes and be set up to comply with social distancing standards.
Lone Star College-Houston North Continues 8-week Classes

Many universities such as Rice and the University of Texas are ending their semesters at Thanksgiving in the event there is another COVID-19 outbreak.

While LSC-Houston North is not taking this approach, the 8-week model does allow for a students to complete courses by mid-October and then restart a week later in the second 8-week term if comfortable doing so.

The fall schedule for courses is:
8 Week 1 Term: August 24 – October 14
8 Week 2 Term: October 21 – December 13
Lone Star College-Houston North Leads System in Course Completion
Lone Star College-Houston North students continue to have high completion rates. In the fall, LSC-HN led the system with a 75.5% successful course completion rate ( meaning students earned an A, B, or C ). In the spring, the students performed even better with a 77.8% rate. This is the highest long semester course success rate of any LSC college for at least the last six years.
The completion numbers can be attributed to a focus upon specific goals by the college including closing demographic completion gaps and increasing the success of first-time-in-college students (FTIC). The graph a highlights the course completion numbers of key student groups that have traditionally been focus areas for Lone Star College
Lone Star College-Houston North Victory Partially Reopens
In response to COVID-19, Lone Star College opened certain campuses on June 1. While most classes are online, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board does not allow certain workforce courses in this format.

LSC-Houston North opened the Victory location this summer with several social distancing protocols including:
  • Certified Nursing Assistant that performs temperature checks;
  • Masks are required for all entrants;
  • Only students enrolled in HVAC and Welding are currently allowed to come to the building;
  • All entrants must complete a health declaration form certifying they have had no symptoms for the past 14 days.

Lone Star College-Houston North Victory will be open for on-site registration on each Wednesday beginning in mid-July. Online registration is currently open.
LSC-Houston North Fallbrook is on track to start classes in Spring 2021!

Located at 12512 Walters Road on the campus of Fallbrook Church, LSC-Houston North Fallbrook is slated to open in Spring 2021.

We're excited to soon offer you an additional location that will offer morning, afternoon and evening courses as well as weekend programs for those working toward an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree.

In addition to small class and lab sizes, the campus will offer the same amenities as our other three campuses including a food pantry, mentorships for first-time-in-college students and shortened classes — eight weeks instead of 16. In addition, we plan to offer mobile tutoring, or tutors who will come to students on campus instead of the other way around, as well as pop-up tutoring.

Interested in Dual Credit?

Do you or someone you know have a child in high school or being home-schooled? Dual Credit allows students to earn high school and college credit at the same time.

Dual credit classes transfer to four-year universities, shortening the time it takes to earn a college degree.

College tuition is waived for dual credit courses, so students and families save money. Dual credit students do NOT pay tuition, only course fees.
