San Francisco 49ers 27 v. Kansas City Chiefs 38
|

San Francisco 49ers
Niners fans, meet your new quarterback: C.J. Beathard. Seen above leading the Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2016 Rose Bowl against the Stanford Cardinal, Beathard took over on Sunday for 49ers starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who, in the fourth quarter of a 35-27 road loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, was carted off the field with what most presume is a season-ending tear of the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in his left knee. An MRI is scheduled for Garoppolo today to confirm the extent of the injury. Beathard made five starts for the 49ers last year before losing the role to Garoppolo. San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said he will likely promote quarterback Nick Mullens from the practice squad to be Beathard's backup.

San Francisco Giants
Veteran Giants infielder Joe Panik, seen above batting in 2014 when he was with San Francisco's then AAA-affiliate, the Fresno Grizzlies, was three-for-four at the plate with an RBI on Saturday, September 22 in a 5-4 losing effort against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri. The Giants, now 15 games out of first place in the National League West Division, have been eliminated from post-season play, but have a chance to play the 'spoiler' when they battle their rivals, the league-leading Los Angeles Dodgers, in a season-ending three-game series this weekend at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Stanford Cardinal 38 v. Oregon Ducks 31 (OT)
"Euphoria in Eugene." Fans of Stanford football are raving about the Cardinal's spectacular, come-from-behind 38-31 overtime road victory against the Oregon Ducks at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon on Saturday, September 22. Trailing 24-7 at the half, Stanford scored two touchdowns during the last three minutes of the third quarter, closing the gap to just three points at 24-21. Seen in these images from 2016 against Colorado at home, senior outside linebacker Joey Alfieri (32 / right) picked up a fumble by Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert and rumbled 80 yards for the first of the two third-quarter scores, followed by a 22-yard offensive rushing touchdown by senior running back Bryce Love (20 / left). Sophomore place kicker Jet Toner kicked a 32-yard field goal for Stanford to tie the game at 31-31 as time expired in the fourth quarter, and Cardinal sophomore quarterback K.J. Costello (327 yards / 3 TDs) threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to freshman tight end Colby Parkinson in overtime to seal Stanford's fourth win of the season while remaining undefeated in 2018. The AP poll seventh-ranked Cardinal will travel to South Bend, Indiana next weekend to take on the eighth-ranked Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. The annual rivalry game will be televised on Saturday, September 29 at 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time on NBC.

Sonoma Raceway -- $76,000 Raised for Local Youth Groups
Above, a fundraising dinner at the Andretti Winery in Napa. Local youth groups will receive more
than $76,000 from Grand Prix of Sonoma.
The INDYCAR Grand Prix Salute kicked off the Verizon IndyCar Series Championship weekend at Andretti Winery in Napa with a festive evening of generous bidding on silent and live auctions. SCC and the Michael Andretti Foundation partnered to host the event, which included a star-studded evening with a Q&A session featuring Andretti Autosport drivers Ryan Hunter-Reay, 2016 Indianapolis 500 winner Alexander Rossi, and teammates Patricio O'Ward and Zach Veach, as well as three generations of Andrettis: Mario, Michael and Marco. The event, which included a reception and a sit-down dinner, raised more than $60,000 for SCC.
The SCC INDYCAR online charity auction, which featured autographed memorabilia, unique collectibles and weekend VIP experiences, reeled in $4,000 prior to the weekend. The three-day race weekend generated an additional $1,000 through various donations.

A's vs. Brewers... The "Oh No!" World Series for FOX Sports
|
There is one week left in the 2018 regular season and there are so many scenarios going into the postseason.
For the networks, there are two dream World Series: 1) The Yankees and Dodgers, two of the most famous franchises with all the money in the world. They represent a very attractive scenario. Also, it would be a coast-to-coast affair. 2) The Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs is another dandy.
Of course, the Houston Astros are trying to win back-to-back World Series which would make for another great story. It doesn't matter who they will play. They are a team with a great rotation and some of the greatest players in baseball: José Altuve, Carlos Correa, George Springer -- this year's Astros Most Valuable Player, and Alex Bregman. Not to mention, a rotation like no other with Verlander-Cole-Keuchek and Morton, along with a good bullpen.
The Cleveland Indians could also be there and they have not won a World Series since 1948, although the Indians' most recent appearance was in a seven-game loss to the Florida Marlins in 1997.
As thrilled as the A's fans would be to see their team again in the October Classic for the first time since 1990, when they were swept by Lou Piniella's Cincinnati Reds, or Milwaukee Brewers fans whose team last made it to the World Series in 1982, to see their Harvey Wallbangers go down in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals, this would be a nightmare for FOX Sports, the official network for the World Series.
The Baseball Gods are unpredictable. The World Series match-up could be the A's (with a population of 420,000) against the Brewers (with a population of 595,000). Obviously these two teams will not bring the desired audience across the country that FOX Sports expects for a World Series, like the match-ups above suggested. But maybe the country needs to know about unfamiliar names like Laureano, Chapman, Olson, Piscotty, Treinen, Yelich, Aguilar, Harden and Shaw. World Series audiences are not all hardcore baseball fans. A big chunk of the audience are casual fans. However, if the Brewers met the A's, there will be great curiosity. But in today's television market with 200 different channels, who knows who would tune in?
Yes, an A's vs. Brewers World Series would be something. The Brewers look like a good bet for a wild card spot and the A's can still win the AL West, although it is unlikely, but they most likely will win one of the two wild card spots.
I am not saying an A's vs. Brewers October Classic is going to happen but it could. For starters, who ever thought the A's were going to win 90 or more games this season and finish second to the Astros? If you know of anybody, please let me know.
Notes: The Yankees have achieved streaks of three, four, and five championships in-a-row, and the A's have achieved a streak of three in-a-row. Back-to-back championships have been achieved an additional 10 times.
The Yanks were the last team to win back-to-back World Series from 1998-2000 when they won it in three consecutive years. If the Astros win this 2018 World Series, it will be the first time anybody has won it back-to-back in 18 years.
Listen to the A's games in Spanish on KIQI 1010AM/990AM Bay Area, Sacramento and Stockton.
