New product development typically requires both qualitative and quantitative research. But conducted without a unified plan, they can present disjointed results that lack continuity and miss significant findings.
 
Qualitative is often used to identify potential opportunities by discovering challenges and pain points of an audience, or to obtain initial reactions to early-stage concept ideas. Quantitative generally follows qualitative once a few possibilities have been identified to optimize the key features or functionality of the product design.
 
When the same research team conducts both phases of the research, there is no need for knowledge transfer or loss of data insights, just a seamless transition from one study to the next. A single research team is able to plan for the best blend and timing of methodologies, as well as build upon the findings as they emerge to tell one unified story.

QUAL/QUANT: HEALTHCARE PROPRIETARY STUDY
Potential changes in healthcare - how we'll be cared for and how we obtain care from providers - continue to be front and center in the news. How do consumers and physicians take in all this information? What do they think?

Zeldis Research and Schlesinger Associates are collaborating on a qual/quant research study to understand perceptions of these changes among consumers and physicians. BRINGING QUANT DATA TO LIFE: VIDEO OPEN-END AND 
"THE BLOB TREE"
At Zeldis Research, we're employing a number of new technologies to bring quantitative data to life with more qualitative methods. Two vivid examples are the video open-end and the 'Blob Tree.' In the video open-end, a subset of respondents can opt to reply to open-ended questions using their webcams. We've been favorably surprised by the quality and quantity of these answers, as well as the demographic diversity of those who choose this option.
 
For years, we have been using the Blob Tree activity in qualitative research, where respondents are asked to choose a numbered 'blob' which best represents their feeling or relationship to say, a company or brand. Recently, we've been incorporating this Blob Tree activity, as well as open-ended questions, into online surveys, generating rich results.
