June 2018

I hope you are enjoying your summer with family and friends!  Children playing outside, swimming, watching lighting bugs, eating ice cream or snow cones fill us with joy this time of year.  It's a time to treasure before the busyness of the school year begins again.

Summer is a time of planning and preparation at CFGC as we review our programs and services as well as prepare for our annual signature fundraiser -  the Starfish Benefit on September 22nd.  I hope you will join us!

With the recent suicide tragedies in the news we have included an important article on helping someone severely depressed -- so relevant in our world today.  Please take time to read it.  Mental illness is treatable.

We are extremely privileged to help hurting Texoma children and families heal, recover and move forward with their lives.  Thank you for supporting our story of hope.

Please take a few minutes to catch up with us.

With Gratitude,

Brenda Hayward

What to Do When a Loved One Is Severely Depressed
By  Heather Murphy,
condensed version reprinted from The New York Time June 7, 2018

There are no easy answers for helping someone struggling with depression, especially if you've already tried and tried. Here are some tips from experts .

Reports of Kate Spade's suicide and  struggle with depression  instantly transformed her from symbol of polished prep to a blunt reminder that suffering affects all types. Three days later we woke to the  news  that another beloved figure, Anthony Bourdain, had taken his life.
These two tragedies have inspired hundreds to tweet some version of the same message: Mental illness is nothing to be ashamed of.

But deep in the comment threads, some have also been debating a more uncomfortable question: What do you do when a friend is depressed for such a long time that you've started to feel that that nothing you can do will make a difference, and your empathy reserves are tapped out? There are no easy answers. But here are some tips from experts:

CFGC Open House Thank you and Celebration!

Thanks to everyone who attended the June 1st Open House.  We proudly shared our newly carpeted and painted facility funded by the Children's Clinic of Sherman and the Oliver Dewey Mayor Foundation.  Our staff were stationed throughout the building to welcome guests and share program and services information.

It was also a time for us to thank the wonderful volunteers of the Sherman Service League and Sisters of Service for their tireless volunteering for the past 15 years making and donating Operation Warm Fuzzy (OWF) blankets for our clients.  The OWF program was created and founded by Sarah Fallon (16 years old at the time.) Its legacy continues to provide love, safety and security to all the children at CFGC.

House Passes Trauma-Informed Care Resolution

In 2016, CFGC Board of Director's approved the agency to become a fully integrated trauma informed organizaition through the adoption of the SAMSHA model of care.  CFGC invested in the process throughout 2017 training staff and board as well as increasing awareness of trauma informed care for many of our collaborative partners.

We are thrilled the  S. Res 346 trauma informed care bill has been passed.  Please read about the process and the resolution.  The resolution declares May, 2018 at National Trauma Awareness Month and  May 22nd at National Trauma-Informed Awareness Day.

Quote from last year's lucky winner:

Dear Ms. Hayward,

I want to express my sincere thanks to the Child and Family Guidance Center of Texoma for giving me a wonderful vacation.  I was the lucky winner last year at the Starfish Benefit, with an opportunity to chose a trip of my choice.

My husband and I spent my birthday this last week in Scottsdale Arizona at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess. It was a first class trip! We had an opportunity to play the TPC Scottsdale champions golf course, and we had a lot of fun!

We enjoyed wonderful food and swam in four of their six pools. It was a very relaxing trip and one that we both enjoyed immensely!

Thank you again and continued success for such a worthy cause.

Sincerely,
Beverly Carter
