Virtual Town Hall Highlights Port of Brownsville
On Dec. 15, House Transportation Committee Chairman Rep. Terry Canales (D-40) hosted a Virtual Town Hall Meeting to address the economic impact of the Port of Brownsville in the state of Texas.

Port Director and CEO Eduardo A. Campirano participated in the 90-minute virtual meeting, discussing with members of the Texas Legislature about the unique contributions the port brings to the Rio Grande Valley and the Texas economy.

Keel laid for first U.S.- Offshore Wind Turbine Installation Vessel
Dominion Energy announced it has reached a major milestone – the keel laying – in the construction of the first Jones Act compliant offshore wind turbine installation vessel, currently being constructed by the global marine shipbuilding firm Keppel AmFELS at its Brownsville, Texas shipyard.

With several gigawatts of offshore wind capacity to be installed along the U.S. East Coast in the next decade, access to Jones Act compliant offshore wind turbine installation vessels is of strategic importance to the U.S. offshore wind market.

Container-On-Barge Service Connects Brownsville with Tampa Ports
In December, Work Cat officially launched its new container-on-barge service between the Port of Brownsville in Texas and Port Tampa Bay in Florida.

The new weekly shipping option efficiently connects markets in Florida and the Southeast United States with Texas' Rio Grande Valley and Mexico's industrial centers in Monterrey, Saltillo, and Matamoros, while offering competitive service and cost, as well as environmental benefits.
OmniTRAX, BRG Contribute $100K to Non-Profits
OmniTRAX and the Brownsville & Rio Grande International Railway (BRG) in December distributed $100,000 in contributions to eight local non-profits.

OmniTRAX COO Gord Anutooshkin, BRG President Norma Torres and OmniTRAX Director of Economic Development Federico Diaz Page joined board members and representatives from the receiving organizations at the BRG office today to share the company’s commitment to the region.

"Brownsville is an important partner for OmniTRAX and the BRG, and we recognize the distress being felt throughout the community," said Diaz Page.

"As the pandemic’s sustained effects strain resources even further, it was critical that we find a way to help those in need. With the local guidance of BRG President Norma Torres and the Brownsville Navigation District Board of Commissioners and Port Director & CEO Eduardo Campirano, these eight local nonprofits were identified as key community resources that offer meaningful and timely services to the Brownsville community."
Texas LNG Signs Long-Term Lease Agreement
On Dec. 16, 2020, Texas LNG Brownsville LLC entered into a long-term lease agreement with the Port of Brownsville, successfully securing the Texas LNG export project site for up to 50 years, an important milestone bringing the FERC permitted project closer to a final investment decision (FID).

The lease agreement covers a 625-acre site located within the Port of Brownsville. Texas LNG plans to construct and operate a 4 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) LNG export terminal on a deepwater frontage site previously secured under an exclusive option to the Lease agreement.

2020 Highlights
Throughout 2020, the Port of Brownsville faced challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic and continued operations.

Despite these hurdles, the port continued to thrive and several promising announcements make 2021 a year to look forward to.

Port of Brownsville officials have reasons to look back on 2020 with fondness despite the difficulties posed by the pandemic. 

The port started off the year by announcing its Foreign Trade Zone’s rank among the top three in the nation for value of exports according to the U.S. FTZ Board annual report to Congress based on figures from 2018.

The increasingly globalized economy has meant prosperity for many, yet millions of Americans have been overlooked, devoid of the same benefits or the potential for upward mobility that comes from widespread investment.
Christmas Drive Brings Cheer
On Dec. 18, port staff continued an annual holiday tradition to deliver gifts to local non-profit organizations.

In addition to toys, hygienic items were also donated to assisted care facilities for the Adopt-a Grandparent program. The following entities were the received Christmas goodies:
