SPECIAL GRADUATION EDITION
|
Congratulations to the Class of 2018
On Thursday, June 21, thirty-five students graduated from The Summit School. We are delighted to present some of our graduation ceremony highlights and a roundup of senior events.
Graduation Day started like any other school day with seniors arriving at The Summit School by 8:45 a.m. via school bus or public transportation, but that's where the similarity ended. Instead of attending a first period class, a number of special events began to unfold.
We extend our thanks to our senior class event coordinators for their dedication and support, and to all the countless Summit staff members, who make all of these events possible:
Yearbook: Michael Alexander, Carol Falco, and Karen Kenis
Graduation Package, Portraits, and Class Rings: Diane Brevetti
Prom, Senior Class Trip, and Graduation Breakfast: Fran Antignani,
Liz Cassese, George Garrison,
Linda Hyman, Larry Litwack, and Tobi Thompson
Senior Videos and Presentation: Cindy Berkiw and Gregory Broas
Graduation Day Breakfast, Portraits, Special Moments, and Getting Ready
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Thanks to Liz Cassese, Tobi Thompson, Larry Litwack, Fran Antignani, and Linda Hyman, it was also one of the most memorable. This year's seniors participated in enjoying this longtime Summit tradition of coming together for one more meal as classmates. Next, it was time to start getting ready with caps and gowns, sharing a few more special moments with Summit staff and friends, and posing for graduation day photos.

Graduation Ceremony
Summit's graduation processional was led by Eric Ellman, who carried the U.S. flag and opened our ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance. Richard Sitman, Summit's Executive Director, began commencement by welcoming over 300 parents, family members, and friends, and introducing this year's senior videos.
Karen and Robbin Park, Summit parents of Ryan Park, and Beth Torin, Summit parent of Rachel Torin, provided their personal perspectives of their time at Summit, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. Before diplomas were conferred, numerous honors were bestowed upon students by Summit faculty. At Summit, we are pleased to have the ability to present our deserving seniors awards of meaningful recognition and scholarship. This year, all of Summit's seniors received recognition and merit awards from Assemblyman David Weprin.

After the awards presentation, the podium was turned over to our Salutatorian, Jordan Levinson, whose remarks touched on the camaraderie that makes Summit such a special place. "Since I first came to this school in 9th grade, I have had the chance to get to know each and every one of you. We were always there for each other, no matter where we went. We all studied together, went on trips, and partied on prom night until 1:00 in the morning." Jordan described The Class of 2018 as a phoenix. "We have metaphorically risen up from the ashes to gain the skills needed for the rest of our lives...Never be afraid to fail and use your failures as a learning experience." To conclude, Jordan presented the powerful lyrics of Oscar Hammerstein II, who, with Richard Rodgers, wrote the music to accompany the graduation scene in the classic musical Carousel. Remember that "with hope in your heart, you'll never walk alone."
Summit's 2018 Valedictorian, Jared Lantner, spoke about persevering through the difficult moments in life saying "While it may be fun to dwell on the ups and downs of our high school years, the important thing to remember is that we've all made mistakes, and the fact that we've learned from them has turned us into better people." Jared went on to thank his family, teachers, and coaches, and also shared his best advice about success:
"I think everybody on this stage has ability. I think that whatever it is you do, you excel in. But still, you will always encounter people who are better at whatever it is you do. When this eventually happens, you must always keep the mindset that the competition in any given field will make you stronger in it. In fact, the danger arises when you get it in your head that the students in your classes are somehow beyond your comprehension and that the degree that you are pursuing will never become a reality. As basketball legend Michael Jordan once said, 'If you quit once it becomes a habit. Never quit.' While it is easy to think that the winners of the world possess something that cannot be taught, the reality is that motivation and persistence is what ultimately leads to success. While I have no control over what field you choose to go into, all I can say is, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, 'Whatever you are, be a good one.' Congratulations and good luck!"
Following the presentation of senior videos, awards, scholarships, and diplomas,
graduates received a well-deserved standing ovation from their families and friends. Declaring the Class of 2018 graduated, students moved tassels from right to left. Congratulations, Summit graduates!
Before the recessional, one more graduate was called to the dais -- Carl Miranda, Summit's beloved teacher and Lady Wildcat Coach, who retired at the end of the 2017-18 school year. Joined by Cindy Berkiw, Allison Edwards, and Summit student and Lady Wildcat Sarah Looks, Mr. Miranda was presented his red and black honor cords, representing the colors of the Lady Wildcats, and a framed certificate to commemorate his thirty-two years of service and excellence.

Class of 2018 Ring Ceremony
Seniors who ordered class rings received them at a ring ceremony on May 15. Rings were presented by Diane Brevetti of Summit's Transition Team. As each student was called, Diane presented an individualized class ring, turned it three times to the right for good luck, and once to the left "to lock it in place" as is Summit's ring-turning tradition. Students personalized their class ring to feature their specific interests, including a center set stone and seal.
Also in attendance to help students celebrate were Yvonne Bowman, Marian Corbett, Allison Edwards, Larry Litwack, Nancy Morgenroth, Tina Rosenbaum, Richard Sitman as well as several teachers and clinical staff.

Senior Class Trip to Rocking Horse Ranch Resort
Graduating seniors made an early morning departure on June 4 and headed out for Summit's annual overnight senior class trip to the Rocking Horse Ranch Resort in upstate New York. From horseback riding to rockclimbing, to kayaking, to paddle-boating on the resort's mountain lake, and to roasting marshmallows around the campfire, everyone came home with great memories of fun and friends.

Summit's Prom
Prom, one of the seminal events of a teen's high school career, is one of the last big hurrahs before graduation -- and what a hurrah it was on May 24 when juniors and seniors arrived to attend Summit's Prom held at Douglaston Manor.
The dresses, the tuxedos and suits, the hair, the limos, the friends, the dates, the photos, and the party, all made it a spectacular evening of music, dining, dancing, and good fun. Here's our night in photos thanks to our roving photographers Summit teachers Carl Miranda and Carol Falco.
Graduation Photography
Parents of graduates can view and/or purchase a variety of photo packages and novelties directly from our professional graduation photographer, Lia Jay Photography. Graduates were photographed in a group as the Class of 2018 in front of the The Summit School and in the gym, and for those who posed in his or her cap and gown before the graduation ceremony.
