Headmaster letter:
Dear Archway Family and Friends,

My son Kenton was home for a few days, back from Embry-Riddle. He and I enjoy playing basketball at a nearby park. On our way down to the park, he was commenting about some of his supervisors in Air Force ROTC and said about one of them, “She is unusually chipper. No one is that happy – at least, not all the time.” It was a passing remark, but one that stuck with me. Why is sustained happiness such a notable characteristic?

My belief is that happiness is a state that we choose, but for many reasons opt not to enjoy. Perhaps one reason is a deferred expectation of ‘better.’ If only this or that thing would change, then my life would be unequivocally better, and I would be happy then. Until then, I will soldier along, pining for the just out-of-reach, engaging life cordially, but not joyfully.

In C.S. Lewis’s address, Learning in Wartime, he exhorts, “Never, in peace or war, commit your virtue or your happiness to the future.” With so little control over so many circumstances, I can be tempted to resign myself to playing the glum victim of Fate or choose to be happy in spite of it all.

At a recent in-service, our teachers were working on a project with a representative from the Great Hearts home office. She stated, “Your teachers are happy.” I responded with, “I know.” In the midst of the hard work of teaching, our faculty routinely chooses happiness. As we commence second quarter, I remind you of the words of the American sage, Robert Keith McFerrin Jr, “Don’t worry. Be happy.”

Truly,
Curtis Fee, Headmaster

PARTNERING WITH PARENTS
  • Literacy Day is November 1st. Parents, make time to read with your student in the evenings and during the weekends. This photo is Headmaster Fee reading to the first graders during recess yesterday. It started with one student and ended up with almost the entire grade within seconds. They were all so attentive and focused on the story.

  • 2nd-6th grade student will take the Galileo Test four times this year; one per quarter. The students completed the first quarter Galileo test in August. The 2nd Quarter Galileo Testing is scheduled for November 4th-8th.

  • The Galileo Comprehensive Assessment System provides a wide range of assessment options in English language arts and mathematics. Galileo assessments are completely aligned to state test blueprints or your customized pacing guides.

  • Khan Academy is an excellent and free Math on line resource for you and your student. https://www.khanacademy.org/ Next week you will receive video links for your student to watch that will help prepare them for the AZ Merit test in the spring.

LOVE AND LOGIC TIPS
EMPATHY is a cornerstone of the Love and Logic method. Below is an excerpt from their website explaining why empathy is key.
Some Benefits of Delivering Love and Logic Consequences with Empathy
• The child is not distracted by the adult’s anger.
• The child must “own” his or her pain rather than blaming it on the adult.
• The adult–child relationship is maintained.
• The child is much less likely to seek revenge.
• The adult is seen as being able to handle problems without breaking a sweat.
• The child learns through modeling to use empathy with others.
Archway North Phoenix is so thankful to our 2019-2020 Donors!
