Niagara Falls NY--June 5, 2015--A Kentucky physician renowned for his work in caring for adults with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular disorders will be the keynote speaker Tuesday June 9, when Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center hosts a regional symposium on best practices in developmental medicine.

Dr. Matt Holder

Dr. Matthew Holder, president of the American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry and global medical advisor to the Special Olympics, will address more than 100 care professionals on the topic of "Lessons Learned: Structuring New Service Delivery Models for People with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities."

Holder is co-director of the Lee Specialty Clinic, billed as Kentucky's new home for compassionate, interdisciplinary care for patients with those disabilities. The facility was featured in a December 2014 New York Times story that called it an oasis of care for people with intellectual disabilities. The story noted that "deficiencies in health care for people with intellectual disability have been cited by the surgeon general, the American Medical Association and the American Dental Association, among others."

The Lee Specialty Clinic combines patient care, teaching and research and is seen as a model of service integration and care coordination.  The Golisano Center for Community Health, now under construction on the Memorial Medical Center campus, will adopt those principles to provide comprehensive integrated health care services to adults with special needs and their families when it opens in the spring of 2016.

Tuesday's forum will begin at 8:30 a.m. In addition to Dr. Holder's keynote presentation, panel discussions on Service Integration and Care Management and on Data Driven Service Outcomes will be featured.

Media coverage is invited.

The event is sponsored by the Golisano Foundation, New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities, People Inc. and its Rivershore affiliate, The ARC of Orleans County, Niagara University and Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center.

About the Golisano Foundation

The Golisano Foundation is one of the largest private foundations in the United States devoted exclusively to supporting programs for people with intellectual disabilities. Founded in 1985 with an initial gift of $90,000 from B. Thomas Golisano, the founder and Chairman of Paychex, the Foundation now has more than $28 million in gross assets and has awarded more than $18 million in grants, about $1.5 million annually, to non-profit organizations in a multi-county region surrounding Rochester, New York that serve people with developmental disabilities.

The foundation is committed to opening doors, changing perceptions, and forging unprecedented partnerships to provide individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities with pathways to self-sufficiency, personal dignity, and the best possible expression of their abilities and talents throughout their lifetimes.

Through targeted initiatives, it is our vision that communities will encourage and commit to inclusion, acceptance and opportunity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities; and provide services that empower individuals to make their way productively and creatively in their communities.
