IIPAC Board to Meet on Monday
ABI's Political Action Committee, the Iowa Industry Political Action Committee (IIPAC),  is dedicated to supporting candidates who understand the importance of fostering a pro-business climate in Iowa. Investing in IIPAC is a way for ABI members to actively participate in the political process and unify their voices to support business-friendly candidates. A specialized board of directors governs IIPAC. The board decides how to direct funding and who to endorse for the state legislature, statewide offices and governor. The IIPAC Board will meet next Monday to discuss the upcoming election and the status of races around the state. If you're interested in joining the IIPAC Board, please contact Nicole Crain at [email protected].

Policy Meetings Continue Next Week
ABI has conducted its first two policy committee meetings this week. Three more will be held next week, when the Economic Growth, Environment and Tax Committees will convene to review ABI's policies. This grassroots process is extremely important to help direct ABI's position on many issues important to businesses. If you haven't signed up, visit our Events page to join a meeting next week.

Federal Spotlight: Treasury & IRS Release Proposed Regulations on Tax
Last week, the Trump administration proposed three regulations regarding bonus depreciation, repatriation and Section 199A. The comment period closes in only 60 days, and any feedback you may have is requested. The first regulation on bonus depreciation increases the allowable first-year depreciation deduction for qualified property from 50% to 100%. The second regulation deals with Section 965, "which levies a transitional tax on post-1986 untaxed foreign earnings of specified foreign corporations owned by United States shareholders by deeming those earnings to be repatriated." You can read more here . The third regulation deals with the new Qualified Business Income deduction, otherwise known as Section 199A. You can read more about that here . The regulations are being issued in compliance with the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which was signed into law last year by President Trump. If you would like to submit comments, please send them to Nicole Crain

Say Goodbye to the One-size-fits-all Strategic Plan

Ryan Burbach, CPA

If I asked a room full of business owners how many of them had undergone a strategic planning process in the past five years, the majority would raise their hand. If I then asked how many were seeing the results they anticipated and were still following through on that plan, the number of hands in the air would be few, if any. Planning comes in many forms, but no matter what type of planning process is undertaken, or how sporadically business teams attempt it, the same holes seem to exist.

Before providing the solution, it is important to understand what business owners are up against. These individuals are the ones creating jobs, driving our economy and have the greatest potential to positively impact the communities in which they reside. But these same business leaders often wear too many hats, assume a great deal of risk, get trapped working in their business instead of on it, and are left with little time to live the lives they originally intended on creating by starting or buying their business in the first place.
