OSHA Outreach Trainer News
October 2019
Important Reminder : As an OSHA Outreach Trainer, you are Required to keep Records of your OSHA 10- and 30-Hour Training Courses
Outreach Trainers are required to keep certain records related to delivering OSHA 10- and 30-hour courses for five (5) years. You must keep these records even if you are delivering training for your employer. Your employer can keep their own records, but you are required to keep them as well and not rely on their records.

OSHA can request copies of your records at any time. This is what we ask for in an audit of your records. If you don’t keep these records or provide them when asked, you could lose you status as an authorized Outreach Trainer. Don’t let that happen!

Here’s a list of the records you are required to keep:

Daily Student Sign-in Sheets
A separate sheet is needed for each day of the course.  A sign-in sheet must include printed or typed first and last names and the signature of all your students. The sign-in sheets must also include the course name, date and time of the course sessions, the training locations (city and state), and the instructors’ printed first and last names along with their signatures.

Student Contact Information
The home or business address where the student will receive their course completion cards.

Detailed Topic Outline
This could also be called a course agenda, outline, syllabus, etc. The outline should include the course title, location and specific date and start and stop time of each topic in that course period. For example, your topic outline could show that you taught “Introduction to OSHA” from 7-8 a.m. You should also include the start and stop times of all your breaks. The trainer’s name must be included; if there is more than one trainer, each trainer’s name must be listed next to the topic(s) they taught.

OSHA Outreach Training Program Report (OTPR)
This is the form you use to request course completion cards on our website. You receive a copy via email and should keep a copy of each report.

Student Course Completion Cards
You need to make a copy of the front and back of each student course completion card before you give it to the student.

Guest Trainers (not OSHA Outreach Trainers)
Keep a list of each guest trainer, their qualifications, the topics they taught and length of training time.

Assistant OSHA Outreach Training Program Trainers
Keep a list of the names of each assistant Outreach Trainer. Include the topics they taught and the number of contact hours allocated to each assistant trainer. Keep a copy of each assistant Outreach Trainer’s current trainer card.

Important note:
OSHA Outreach Training Program authorized trainers may not rely on internal or external staff, clients, employers or third parties to maintain the required OSHA Outreach Training Program training records. It’s up to you to keep your own training records.

Planning for Success
by Addie Hosier
We all have goals; things we want to achieve big and small. New Year’s resolutions, anyone?

Here’s my two-cents on how to achieve a goal. We’ve all read different ideas on goal-setting and achievement and I’ve found a couple of things that have worked for me. Maybe you want to finish a professional OSHA certificate program, run a ½ marathon, take a bucket-list vacation or do that home-improvement project.

  1. Imagine the end result or outcome and really nail down WHY you want this. I’ve read that the bigger and more clear the WHY is for you, the HOW of it will be easier to figure out. When my doctor asked me why I had come to her for help on improving my health issues (obesity and diabetes) she asked my WHY this was so important to me. I blurted out, “I don’t want to die yet.” This surprised both of us but it was true for me. With her advice and that sense of purpose I found the HOW and have improved my health a lot since then.
  2. Start with the end result or outcome in mind and work backwards to now. I decided to get my CHST certification. I imagined how that would feel to accomplish this and figured out when I wanted this to happen. The biggest part of making this happen was paying for all the steps required and putting a date on the calendar for the test required for the CHST. Now I had some skin in the game (non-refundable) and a test date. Divided the task up into smaller chunks based on the time available and just kept at it. Took the test on October 12 and passed it.
  3. Accountability is a big help in achieving goals. You probably already know what works for you – maybe being accountable to another person or group helps you. I like being accountable to myself and I use calendars and even some apps on my phone to help. The more accountable I am the more successful I am. Even with all that, I still choose to eat something “off-program” or take a day (or several!) off from study but the key word here is “choose”. I never think of it as “cheating” or being “bad”. That’s self-defeating. I just chose to do whatever it was – but I still note it and then make a different choice later.

Probably nothing you didn’t already know, right? When you are thinking about accomplishing something – maybe even just getting your OSHA Outreach Trainer renewal class done before your card expires – these tips might be helpful. Let me know what things have helped you achieve your goals!
This 4-day course is designed for those who are interested in teaching OSHA 10-hour and 30-hour maritime safety and health outreach courses to employees and other interested groups. This course authorizes the student to become a trainer in the Maritime Outreach Trainer Program and to conduct both 10-hour and 30-hour maritime safety and health courses for shipyard employment, marine terminals, and longshoring, and to issue cards to participants verifying course completion.
