Flood Update
The water is slowly going down, but there is no telling when it will recede enough for cleanup and repairs to commence. With all the activities scheduled for the riverfront in the coming months, plans might have to be altered; follow the Downtown Burlington Iowa, Greater Burlington Partnership, Visit Burlington Iowa, and Burlington RAGBRAI pages on Facebook for news and updates.

For those with buildings and businesses affected by the flood and recent storms, be sure to report damage on the survey by clicking here

Remember as we deal with the aftermath of the flood that the permanent floodwall did not fail, and it is not complete. Additional permanent floodwall construction is slated for 2020. Also, remember that these flood remediation improvements depend on local sales tax income. Amazon does not care if our riverfront and downtown are protected, and neither do out of town malls or big box stores. Spending your dollars in Burlington DOES make a difference.
DPI Hosts Visual Merchandising Workshop & Assistance
Downtown Partners is one of a few Main Street Iowa programs chosen to obtain technical assistance this year in visual merchandising - creating eye-catching displays and improving store layout. Happily, the professional who will be visiting is Burlington's own Anna Buhmeyer Woodward, who has done outstanding work for major retailers and in other Main Street communities. Her last technical assistance visit here was in 2015.

On Wednesday, June 12 at 6 PM, Anna will present an overview of the theory and techniques of visual merchandising in Capitol Theater Annex. All downtown merchants are strongly encouraged to attend this free presentation, which will be both fun and informative. Anna will also be doing hands-on work with five downtown businesses during her visit. Visual cues and layout say a lot about a merchant's inventory, price point, and vibe. It will be interesting to see the results of her visit!
Outdoor Movies Return to Downtown
Grab a lawn chair and head down to the 5 & V - downtown Burlington's outdoor theater! Four great movies will be shown on the side of Drake Hardware and Software at Fifth and Valley Streets this summer. There's no admission for the events, though donations are accepted. The movies will start at dusk, but be sure to come down early for games and activities - and to pick out a choice spot. There will be snack and drinks available, too.

The Latest News...
  • Our heartfelt thanks go out to the City's public works crew for working so hard to protect our downtown from floodwaters. It has been a difficult spring, and their efforts are much appreciated.
  • On June 27, the Jefferson St. Farmers Market Goes Green! The market will feature electric car rides, demonstration bikes, earth-healthy info booths, and more. Bring down your reusable bags and join us! The Jefferson St. Farmers Market is supported by Two Rivers Bank & Trust.
  • Thanks to Zaiser's Florist & Greenhouse and all the volunteers who turned out to plant the downtown flowers. They really accent the beauty of our already beautiful downtown. The downtown flowers and maintenance are partly funded by the John H. Witte, Jr. Foundation and Keep Burlington Beautiful.
  • Thanks also go out to the volunteers who put on an exceptional Snake Alley Criterium, and to the sponsors who made it possible. Due to scheduled road construction, the Friday road races will not take place next year, but the Criterium task force is already working on plans for a new evening event in 2020.
  • Congratulations to the newlyweds! DPI Board and Design committee member Stephanie Waples and former DPI intern (and continuing volunteer) Conner Brakeville were married this past weekend - in downtown, of course. Best wishes on many happy years ahead!
