Dear Families,

This week, 5th grade language arts teacher, Ms. Christina Triano, was asked to share why diversity in education and studying Black History Month are important for students. I am very proud to introduce her response.

In addition, please enjoy our Black History Month "virtual assembly" and a big thank you to all the parents involved, teachers, and Dr. John Courson for their outstanding contributions.

I can't believe March is already upon us and next week is the 5th grade Winter Ball! I want all our 5th grade girls, who shared with me that they are excitedly searching for the perfect dress, to know that I am right there with you searching for my outfit and can't wait!!

Have a wonderful weekend!
Warmly,
Davina Spillmann
“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” These words, widely attributed to abolitionist Harriet Tubman, serve as a reminder that the ability to achieve great things lies within each of us. Honoring those in history who have dared to aspire for a brighter future for themselves and for others can not only inform, but inspire.

Park Maitland School has always embodied the art of celebrating what makes each student unique and fostered a culture of leadership that affirms our diverse backgrounds and empowers pride in ourselves, our school, and our community. Black History Month presents us with another opportunity to do just that. Students across our campus have delved into the stories of scientific pioneers, inventors, activists, athletes, authors and artists. From George Washington Carver’s advice to President Roosevelt about crop rotation, to Frederick Douglass’s soaring oratory, and Maya Angelou’s encouraging words of empathy and compassion, the opportunities to represent African American greatness abound. By celebrating the diversity of talent across cultural experiences and the contributions of often unheard voices, students’ eyes are opened to the wide expanse of ways that individuals can meaningfully contribute to our world as we know it today. As we honor all voices in history, we strengthen our bonds to one another, enrich our understanding of the world around us, and further cultivate a sense of belonging and mutual respect essential for each of us to thrive. Learning about the individual contributions of exceptional Americans during Black History Month inspires us to realize the potential within ourselves.

READ ACROSS AMERICA
Next week is Read Across America! Students get to dress up and celebrate reading!

What is Read Across America?
"Launched in 1998 by the National Education Association (NEA) and guided by a committee of educators, NEA’s Read Across America is the nation’s largest celebration of reading. This year-round program focuses on motivating children and teens to read through events, partnerships, and reading resources that are about everyone, for everyone."
Wow! A big Thank You to TPS for the books that were gifted to the Park Maitland School Library! Each year Reba Gordon and Georgia Parker at Trinity Prep put on an amazing Author Fest. This year the event was virtual and many of our students were able to participate online. These books were gifted for our support of this incredible event.
SUPERSTAR TEACHER OF THE WEEK
"The greatest artist was once a beginner." These words hang in a picture frame on the wall of my home art studio and serve as a reminder of humble beginnings. The picture was a gift from my father, and it is one that I have cherished for years, and still do, to this day!

I have been happily working at Park Maitland School for the past 20 years as an art teacher and chair of the art department. It has been my pleasure to have had the wonderful (and continued) opportunity to work with thousands of Park Maitland’s finest, budding artists! Our students have the fullest and purest imaginations that are just bursting at the seams! It has also been a great joy for me to assist students in discovering, developing, and using their creativity over all these years. I love to help inspire their young minds and watch their small hands create magical things!

I have seen our marvelous school go through many amazing changes and a lot of growth! In 2004, I watched in awe as they began to build the AAC (Arts and Athletics Center). While it was under construction, I donned a pink hard helmet and walked through it’s “skeleton”. I knew I had found my long term home! The plans for the AAC included a beautiful, spacious art room, which I continue to love! Once I was able to “move in”, I worked very hard to personalize my classroom. I wanted to create an artistic haven for my students and all who enter. *If you’ve ever visited, you know what I mean. It’s very colorful!

My own childhood was very colorful, as well; it was quite unique! I was raised just outside of Boston, Mass. in a beautiful, quaint, New England town called Hudson. When I was 5 years old, my parents bought a turn-of-the-century Queen Anne Victorian home, which I witnessed them renovate and restore throughout my entire childhood. It was painted in 7 different colors and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It was dripping with ornamentation, both inside and out.

As I continue to embrace my artistic journey in this world, I wanted to voice my gratitude and thanks to you, and the children that you share with me.
