Murrieta Valley High School Alumni Rickie Fowler has had a very successful golf career. In high school, Fowler won the Southwestern League finals taking MVHS to the state championship in 2007. After his senior year, Fowler attended Oklahoma State University and was ranked as the number one amateur golfer in the world. He kept this title for 37 weeks in 2007, and 2008. Since then, Fowler has won several awards and championships. In his professional career, Fowler has won 5 PGA TOUR Victories, 3 international victories and additional tournament championships. Great job, Rickie, the City of Murrieta is proud!

Come join the summer fun at the Murrieta Public Library! The Summer Reading Challenge (SRC) is for all ages and begins Monday, June 10, and continues through Saturday, July 20. This year's SRC theme is It's Showtime At Your Library! The benefits of summer reading for children are clear. According to research from Dominican University, students who participate in public library summer reading programs scored higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the next school year than those who did not participate. Plus it's fun! 

The Summer Reading Challenge is sponsored by the Friends of the Murrieta Library with their generous donation of $10,000 for performers and supplies. The Summer Reading Challenge is also made possible by local businesses who donate coupons and other gifts for reading incentives. The City of Murrieta is proud to announce its 49th Annual Father's Day Car Show event taking place at California Oaks Sports Park on Saturday, June 15, from 3:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Pre-registration is $25 and includes an event t-shirt. Day of registration is $35 with no event t-shirt. The event will showcase pre-1980 and specialty vehicles. Please join us as the City turns back the clock and heads back to the 80's in celebrating its 28th birthday with food, music, rides, vendors, and fireworks! If you're heading out this summer to enjoy the great outdoors, PeaceHealth.org has some tips to safeguard your season's getaways.

In the Woods

• 90 minutes of walking in nature can help calm your brain and nervous system.
• Dress in layers when hiking. Air temperatures can go from warm to cold quickly, especially at night or if the elevation changes.
• Avoid blisters by having snug fitting socks and shoes that let you wiggle your toes.

On the Water

• About 50% of Americans can't swim. Life jackets are important for all of us - big and small.
• Cold shock: That river looks nice and cool on a hot day, but be cautious of water temperature, it can feel very chilly.
• Sun + water. Reflections off the water intensify UV rays. Slather on the sunscreen (including under your chin) and wear a hat and sunglasses.

At the Coast

• 8 feet per second! That's how fast a rip current can go - faster than an Olympic swimmer! Be alert and if in doubt, don't go in.
• Here's the shadow rule: Short shadow - seek shade. The sun's rays are more intense when your shadow is short. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. is the prime time to get sunburn.
• Clouds do not equal protection. Even if it's cloudy out, keep sunscreen handy because UV light can pass through clouds.
