A Message from the City Manager...
|
Summer is around the corner, the temperature is rising and school is almost out. This month, I wanted to remind you about all of the amazing opportunities this city offers for our youth, seniors and community members alike
during those lazy days
.
The Murrieta Youth Center is a fabulous place for youth (grades 6 through 9) to play and stay connected to their community. The Youth Center and Murrieta Public Library offer a variety of fun and interactive events all summer long. The summer reading program is always a hit for students! The Murrieta Senior Center will continue to offer various exercise classes, craft projects, games, and music sessions. Make sure you stop by and get involved this summer.
And of course there is the City pool where you can learn to swim or simply splash around.
When I think of summertime, I think of
friends hanging out in the sunshine
, BBQ's and family fun. This month the City has plenty of events that will encompass just that. On June 15, the City will be hosting the 49th Annual Father's Day Car Show. This event will showcase pre-1980's and specialty vehicles.
Please see below for details on the new date and time!
On June 29, the City will be hosting our 28th Annual Birthday Bash. These are two of our biggest events each year; I hope
to see you there
!
Have a great month!

Murrieta Fire & Rescue is currently taking applications for the next
Citizen's Fire Academy
, which starts on August 21, and is conducted over seven consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6 - 9 p.m., with the graduation and muster scheduled for Saturday, October 5, at 8 a.m. The Academy is fun, educational, and interactive.
Class size is limited to 25 members and will be first come - first serve, pending acceptable background check. There is no fee to participate and priority registration is given to Murrieta residents and business owners.
Due to the popularity and design of our academy, we ask that all applicants make a firm commitment to attend each week. Our academy members are grouped into five engine companies, with five members each. Many of the interactive activities will require all participants to work together. We host our CFA only once a year at Fire Station 1, and we keep our class size limited allowing everyone the opportunity to participate.
If you find that you are unable to attend each Wednesday and the Saturday muster, please consider joining the waitlist for the 2020 class.

Burglary Prevention for Business
|
|
If you own or operate a business, make sure it is safe and secure. Your customers want to feel safe when they visit, and they are likely to return if their visit is positive. Law enforcement encourages businesses to subscribe to the Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) concept as an easy way to ensure that their business is as protected as possible. What is the secret to CPTED? It is the design and layout of the business that eliminates or reduces criminal behavior and at the same time encourages people to "keep an eye out" for each other. The National Crime Prevention Institute defines the purpose of CPTED as:
"The proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction of fear and incidence of crime, and an improvement in the quality of life."

Come join the summer fun at the Murrieta Public Library! The Summer Reading Challenge (SRC) is for all ages and begins Monday, June 10, and continues through Saturday, July 20. This year's SRC theme is It's Showtime At Your Library! The benefits of summer reading for children are clear. According to research from Dominican University, students who participate in public library summer reading programs scored higher on reading achievement tests at the beginning of the next school year than those who did not participate. Plus it's fun!
The Summer Reading Challenge is sponsored by the Friends of the Murrieta Library with their generous donation of $10,000 for performers and supplies. The Summer Reading Challenge is also made possible by local businesses who donate coupons and other gifts for reading incentives. 9 Tips to Stay Summer Safe
|
If you're heading out this summer to enjoy the great outdoors, PeaceHealth.org has some tips to safeguard your season's getaways.
In the Woods
- 90 minutes of walking in nature can help calm your brain and nervous system.
- Dress in layers when hiking. Air temperatures can go from warm to cold quickly, especially at night or if the elevation changes.
- Avoid blisters by having snug fitting socks and shoes that let you wiggle your toes.
On the Water
- About 50% of Americans can't swim. Life jackets are important for all of us - big and small.
- Cold shock: That river looks nice and cool on a hot day, but be cautious of water temperature, it can feel very chilly.
- Sun + water. Reflections off the water intensify UV rays. Slather on the sunscreen (including under your chin) and wear a hat and sunglasses.
At the Coast
- 8 feet per second! That's how fast a rip current can go - faster than an Olympic swimmer! Be alert and if in doubt, don't go in.
- Here's the shadow rule: Short shadow - seek shade. The sun's rays are more intense when your shadow is short. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. is the prime time to get sunburn.
- Clouds do not equal protection. Even if it's cloudy out, keep sunscreen handy because UV light can pass through clouds.
