Evening of Scholarship
Wows the Crowd
This past Tuesday evening, we were privileged to hear from nine exceptional, young TABC student scholars at our annual Distinguished Scholars Program banquet. The banquet provided an opportunity for the tenth graders in the Distinguished Scholars Program to present the research projects they had been diligently working on over the course of the past two years. As part of the program, each student published a research article under the guidance of a mentor with expertise in their subject matter of choice. Topics ranged across a plethora of disciplines, and included "Antibiotic Resistance: How Antibiotics Went from Miracle Drugs to Potential Obsolescence," "The Psychological Effects of Video Games," "Rabbinic Attitudes Towards Demonology," and "A Computational Interpretation of Black Holes," among many others. The evening included PowerPoint presentations in which each student delivered a synopsis of their research, which allowed the audience to get a glimpse into the fascinating data they had collected and analyzed. This was followed by an award ceremony, where each young scholar received a gift from the school, in addition to the Distinguished Scholars Journal containing their published research papers. It was a truly impressive evening that left the students, their mentors, and everyone involved with a tremendous sense of accomplishment. Mazal tov to the Distinguished Scholars on a successful year of independent research! TABC is very proud of each and every one of you!

If you would like to receive a copy of the journal, please reach out to Mrs. Deniera Goldenberg at [email protected]. For more photos, click here.
Mishnathon at TABC
Rabbi Kessel's Y8 shiur dedicated the entire morning of May 14th to finishing Mishnayot Seder Nezikin. Each Chavruta had 3 weeks to prepare their mesechta and shiur finished the seder all together. The siyum was made by sophomore Harry Meister. Rabbi Yablok, Rabbi Mandelstam, Rabbi Einhorn, Rabbi Stone and Mr. Strassman all stopped in to give words of chizuk. The Mishnayot and food were generously sponsored by the parents of Y8. For more photos click here.
Seniors Present Capstone Projects
A Capstone project is not merely an exploration of a topic but an application of the knowledge one has gained. In a Capstone project, one goes beyond mere research to ask what purpose can my research serve?

This year, the English Department (Dr. Master, Mrs. Milch, Mr. McGoldrick, Mrs. Goldberg and Mrs. Shavelson) continued the tradition begun last year of requiring all seniors to complete a Capstone project in any field of their interest.

On Friday morning, May 17th, after the seniors presented their projects in a science-fair set-up, three seniors were chosen to present to the entire audience:
Dovid Pearlman began with the provocative question: What benefits students more, same sex schooling or co-ed schooling? His research made us ponder the answer.
Yonatan Katz asked an equally current question: How do we create a system that most effectively handles student attendance? Yonatan (and Elior Dahan) came up with an engineering feat--a fingerprint machine that creates a permanent record on a spreadsheet.
The third presenter was Ned Krasnopolsky, who asked multiple questions about a deeply erudite topic: How does the exclusion (or inclusion) of Ben Sira in the Jewish Biblical canon inform us about historical Rabbinic attitudes toward the work and the structure of the canon in general? What is Ben Sira's impact on Judaism today?

Anyone who came was richly rewarded not only by the new knowledge he/she gained but by the questions he/she was provoked to ponder.

Tzurba D'Rabbanan Visits YU
Tzurba D'Rabbanan students visited the Yeshiva University Beit Midrash to take their final bechina. It was inspiring to see TABC students contribute to the Torah atmosphere of YU. Thank you to Rabbi Yoni Mandelstam for teaching and inspiring these students as they learn together during their free time.

Senior Trip
The TABC Senior Trip to Florida got a little more media coverage than usual this year. The annual graduation trip, a fun last hurrah for the seniors in the days before graduation, featured outings to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, Busch Gardens, and, on Tuesday night, Tropicana Field, home of Major League Baseball's Tampa Bay Rays. Despite the team's winning record, the Rays drew their smallest crowd ever that night, but what they lacked in quantity, they more than made up for in quality. The trademark Storm spirit echoed throughout the stadium, attracting the attention of other spectators, Tweeters, and even Fox Sports Florida, who broadcasted the game. Click here to see the boys leading the stadium in "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" during the seventh inning stretch and here for TABC's Fox Sports debut. The manager of the Rays himself mentioned the boys in his postgame interview found here (fast forward to 2:22). Class of 2019, you will be missed- but we'll always have Tampa.

Lag B'Omer 2.0
On Wednesday, May 29th, due to rain on Lag B'Omer,  we had our makeup day at Votee Park We called it Lag B'Omer 2.0   This time the weather held off and immediately after davening, students made their way to the park.  The students split up by shiur - some played baseball and some played football. Having the rebbeim playing ball with their shiurim made the games a lot of fun and very enjoyable. Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Yosef Adler, Rabbi Raphi Mandelstam and Rabbi Jonathan Kessel joined their talmidim in games of softball, while Rabbi Ezra Wiener and Rabbi Jake Berman played football with their respective crews. Upon the conclusion of their games everyone made their way back to TABC where there was a special chalav Yisrael ice cream truck waiting for them.  The soft serve ice cream with toppings was a real treat for everyone as we enjoyed Lag B'Omer 2.0 in style!

Meanwhile, the juniors enjoyed the ice cream while spending quality time with their rebbeim later in the day. Some shiirim played ball while other had end of year siyumim and celebration. What a day all around! For more photos, click here.
Rabbi Adler Visits Sephardic Minyan
For the first time in TABC history, Rabbi Adler visited the Sephardic Minyan this past Friday.  Rabbi Adler shocked the students with his leading the tzibur in k'riat Shema in a perfect Sephardic melody.  Afterwards, Rabbi Adler explained to the group that he served as associate principal at the predominantly Syrian Hillel High School in Deal, New Jersey during the 1980's where he learned Sephardic tefillah.

The Sephardic Minyan, led by Rabbi Jachter, has ended its most successful year with fifteen to twenty students joining each minyan twice weekly (with donuts served at the conclusion of tefillah.)  We look forward to even greater growth next year, b'ezrat Hashem!
Y10 Takes a Mezuzah Trip to
the Rauzman Home
Y10 was treated to breakfast at the Rauzman home on Thursday and then toured the house from top to bottom as Rabbi Wiener explained the intricacies of the laws of Mezuza and the thought process behind placement of the mezuza in various locations throughout the house. A special thank you to Dr. Azriel and Mrs. Ilana Rauzman for graciously opening up their home for this learning experience.
Y4 Spends Shabbat with
Rabbi & Mrs. Einhorn
Rabbis Einhorn's Y4 Shiur spent Shabbat at their Rebbe's home in Passaic.  The Einhorns graciously opened their home to the boys for sleeping as well as all Shabbat meals. Rav Yitz Rabovksy and Rabbi Jonathan Kessel joined the group for Seudah Shlishit. Rabbi Kessel addressed the crowd with a passionate talk about the parsha. The boys had a fabulous time and were spiritually uplifted by the event!
Y17C Shabbaton with Rabbi Fridman at Jewish Center of Teaneck
Talmidim of Y17C in Rabbi Fridman's gemara shiur joined the Jewish Center of Teaneck this past Shabbat, Behar, for the third annual Jewish Center of Teaneck-TABC Shabbaton.

In traditional TABC fashion, the Shabbaton opened on Erev Shabbat with a shiur basketball game.

On Friday night, with Nachum Krasnopolsky leading Kabbalat Shabbat, Avrumi Davis delivered a Dvar Torah addressing the emancipation of slaves during Yovel, noting, in the name of Pnei Yehoshua, that the fact that the Torah refers to this as a liberation for all of the inhabitants of the Land, Dror Ba'Aretz LiChol Yoshveha , and not merely the slaves alone, is a reflection of Chazal's dictum that anyone who owed an Eved Ivri indeed was enslaved himself.  Later on Shabbat, Eli Rifkind addressed the same question with an alternative solution, noting that the Torah generally abhorred slavery, and that the emancipation of even Hebrew slaves could be seen as a rejuvenation for the entire society.

Later on Friday night, the Talmidim went to the Fridman home for an oneg that lasted into the wee hours.  After many Divrei Torah on the parsha, the talmidim engaged in a spirited discussion concerning the future of Modern Orthodoxy, and the need to reinvigorate the Torah U'Madda community.

Rabbi Fridman's regular Shabbat morning Rambam shiur was delivered by Akiva Sturm '19, who developed Rambam's point of view on the topic of Ribbit Devarim.  In the context of the shiur, Akiva developed Rambam's point of view, in contrast to Ramban's, and used this conceptual distinction to relate to a dispute between R. Moshe Feinstein and R. Shlomo Zalman Auerbach regarding expressions of gratitude in the context of Ribbit Devarim.

Shabbat morning davening, led by Moshe Golubchik '19, Daniel Becker '20 and Yehoshua Kanarek '19, featured a Dvar Torah by Alexander Ostrin '19 which developed the motif of Divine mastery over the cosmos, Ki Li Ha'Aretz, through Parashat Behar.

Shabbat lunch featured a discussion led by Akiva Prager '20,centering on the coda of Parashat Behar, Ki Li Bnei Yisrael Avadim, Avadai Hem, and the challenge of sensing avdut in the relative socioeconomic and material comfort of the United States.

Lunch was followed by an optional Bekiut Chaburah led by Rabbi Fridman for the talmidim who will, b'ezrat Hashem, be completing Masekhet Sanhedrin this week.

Shabbat afternoon featured a shiur by Rabbi Fridman for the talmidim on the subject of Sefirat Shemitin U'Yovlot, with a focus on the role of Beit Din HaGadol in the performance of this mitzvah, as well as the mitzvah of Tekiah during the Yovel year.  This shiur developed many of the motifs that Y17C studied over the course of the entire year in Masekhet Sanhedrin, with a heavy emphasis on the interaction between Beit Din HaGadol and society at large.

Following Rabbi Fridman's shiur, Avraham Yaakov Gelman '19 delivered Rabbi Fridman's Pirkei Avot shiur, with an emphasis on the role of gratitude in cultivating God's awareness, even to the point of achieving Rambam's famous description in Hilkhot De'ot (Chapter 3) of the individual capable of sensing the Divine in all of his interactions, B'Chol Derachecha Da'ehu .

Seudah Shlishit, sponsored by Dr. Ben and Michele Cooper, parents of TABC alumnus Avi Cooper ('17) in honor of their son Alexander's Bar Mitzvah, featured a stirring exhortation delivered by Yonasan Rutta '20 explicating the underlying concept of Gadol Metzvuveh V'Oseh (Kiddushin 30a), an apropos theme for the Bar Mitzvah celebration.

The Shabbaton was made possible by the exceptional hospitality of both the Breen and Helfgot families in hosting so many of our talmidim.
