Kids w/Dyslexia Benefit From Orthographic Facilitation During Spoken Word Learning
[Source: JSLHR]

Purpose Orthographic facilitation describes the phenomenon in which a spoken word is produced more accurately when its corresponding written word is present during learning. We examined the orthographic facilitation effect in children with dyslexia because they have poor learning and recall of spoken words. We hypothesized that including orthography during spoken word learning would facilitate learning and recall.

A Possible Origin of Human Speech
[Source:  Neuroscience News]

Scientists in the lab of Winrich Freiwald have shed new light on the underpinnings of human speech by identifying neural circuitry in the brains of monkeys that could represent a common evolutionary origin for social communication. As reported in the journal Neuron, these circuits are involved in face recognition, facial expression, and emotion. And they may very well have given rise to our singular capacity for speech.

Is Too Much Screen Time Harming Children's Vision?
[Source: Medical X-Press]

As children spend more time tethered to screens, there is increasing concern about potential harm to their visual development. Ophthalmologists-physicians who specialize in medical and surgical eye care-are seeing a marked increase in children with dry eye and eye strain from too much screen time.
But does digital eyestrain cause lasting damage? Should your child use reading glasses or computer glasses? As you send your kids back to school this month for more time with

[Source: Medical X-Press]

A pair of researchers at the University of Colorado has found that preschool kids ate more vegetables when presented with segmented plates with pictures of fruits and vegetables on them. Feeding Problems in Children with Autism
[Source: The Journal of Early Intervention via Your Therapy Source]

Researchers have determined that there is a higher prevalence of feeding problems in children with autism over three years of age.  The research has consistently found that more than 50% of children with ASD exhibit limited food acceptance.  This can increase stress levels for families, in addition, to put children at risk for decreased intake of important minerals and vitamins.

With Back to School hurtling our way it is time to share this adorable little and  easy Origami Pencil craft for kids. As you know, we love origami for kids, as it is fun and so very versatile, but also because it carries HUGE Educational Benefits.  We have introduced to kids at a very young age (we have some great Origami for Preschoolers here).  We particularly love this simple origami pencil, as it is quick and easy. There are a number of pencil patterns out there. This is the easiest by far - so easy in fact

[Source: Crazy Speech World]

The school supply aisles are stocked and I've already received my welcome back letter from my administrator... that can only mean one thing:  Back to School is here!  I always feel bittersweet at the end of the summer, because on one hand, I love my lazy summer days.  BUT, I'm also looking forward to getting back into the groove with the best job ever.

DIY Sponge Water Bombs
[Source:  Woo Jr.]

One of the most fun things about summer is all the fun water play ideas out there! One of my favorite things as a kid was playing with water balloons. However, water balloons are disposable, not great for the environment, and are a huge choking hazard for children 3 and under. So instead of water balloons this summer, try making these DIY Sponge Water Bombs! They're reusable, safe for little kids, and don't hurt as much as traditional water balloons. Here's what you'll need to make them!

SLP Corner: Learning to Follow Directions in Speech Therapy
[Source: Activity Tailor]

Half the battle with Kindergarteners is following directions.  While all those early reading and math skills are critical components, it's the inability to follow directions that derails kiddos and classrooms most.

Parents often feel that following directions has more to do with compliance and tend to say "refuses to" or "won't listen," maybe "stubborn" or "uncooperative." My experience has been that the ones not following directions are struggling more with the concepts and

OT Corner: Get Organized...Tips for the School-based OT
[Source: OT School House]

I must confess first of all that organization and I have a long and sorted history. I am often jealous of coworkers who are meticulously organized (Jayson!) as I have often felt that I am missing that gene. My disorganization has been an ongoing struggle starting in grade school with my desk and backpack. I was the student with random crumpled papers crammed into the back and objects falling out onto the floor. As a result organization is

Caught your attention with that title didn't I? I'm sorry, I don't have a magic wand pill or some type of special ed teacher sorcery to share. There's no quick fix in the world of behavior change.
