  Dear Friend in Faith,

Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Throughout our faith history, there has been plenty of disagreement about what to do with the book of James. Though it was obviously included in the canonization of our Bible, Martin Luther believed it to be theologically flimsy, going so far as to call it "an epistle of straw" that "has nothing of the nature of the gospel in it."  

Unlike many of the other epistles, the book of James isn't addressed to a specific audience. Though it is obviously a Christian writing, it never actually mentions the death and resurrection of Jesus. It certainly is a strange book.

Still, despite it's unique nature, I fully believe that the book of James has so much to offer us today. Written at a time when...


Turning Hunger into Hope June 16
PVUMC families of all shapes and sizes are going to pack meals for hungry children Saturday, June 16, 4:30-6:30 pm. What a great way to celebrate Father's Day! Thank you for turning hunger into hope with your two hands at the Feed My Starving Children Mesa Warehouse. Every month, we have a packing event. Register for the event on July 21 now .

Sunday Worship at PVUMC
Paradise Valley United Methodist Church (PVUMC) invites you to worship with us at 8, 9:30 or 11 am. Elementary children begin and end in worship. PreK/K classes at 9:30 and 11 am. The Childcare Center is open to children 6 weeks-36 months for all services.

 Submit prayer requests using our online request form or call the church office at 602.840.8360. Your request will be shared with our 200+ list of prayer warriors on email and listed in the bulletin if you desire. Summer Sundays, Vacation Bible Camp and Sportball
Vacation Bible Camp, Rolling River Rampage: Experience the Ride of a Lifetime with God , July 16-20, 2018 , 9 am – 12 noon, will be here before you know it! If you can volunteer to lead a class, help with decorating, or assist in any way, please email Rev. Brenda Smith, brenda@pvumc.org OR Bethany Taylor, VBC chair, bethany_taylor@hotmail.com . NEW this year is an afternoon sports camp, Sportball, which extends the day until 3:30 pm.

Journeys Small Groups at PVUMC
Just because it’s summer, it doesn’t mean the church closes down. We continue to ignite faith, transform lives and create community, and you’re invited to journey with us.  Journeys, small groups at pvumc, continue year round. In this more relaxed 
season, there may be fewer opportunities, but there are still many choices. Pick up a guidebook on Sunday or download it here and talk to a friend about joining you on a new journey this summer. 

PVUMC Summer Worship Schedule
PVUMC has announced a new summer schedule. The 8 and 9:30 am traditional services will combine for the summer, meeting in the sanctuary at 9:30 am July 1 through September 2. The 8 am service returns to the chapel on September 9. Read More
PVUMC Preschool Job Openings
Paradise Valley United Methodist Church Preschool is currently interviewing and hiring Assistant Teachers and Aides for the 2018-19 school year. The Preschool serves families with children who are 12 months old and steady walkers up through Junior Kindergarten. The Preschool provides a play-based learning environment that equips each child with the knowledge, skills, and values to be a life-long learner.
Good News from the Bishop
Bishop Bob Hoshibata of the Desert Southwest Conference has announced the good news that he will appoint Christopher Wurpts, youth ministries director, as a local pastor to our church. His appointment will begin once he completes his licensing school as a local pastor, later this summer. If you see Christopher, please offer your congratulations or send him an email at Christopher@pvumc.org.

Summer Camp and Youth Missions
We encourage our youth to volunteer at Vacation Bible Camp the week BEFORE the 2018 Senior High Mission Trip to Houston, TX, July 22-27, 2018, and at Mingus Mountain elementary camps. There are also camps for junior and senior high youth. Read more about the summer camps via the Desert Southwest Conference and register today.
