Join us as we celebrate hopeful, moving, challenging reminders about what we, as Unitarian Universalists, are called to do, and BE, in the world.

Music TBD

Feb 21, “Beloved Community in Practice,” Rev. Sam Trumbore

The ideals of community make it sound delightful. Yet individuals imperfectly fit themselves into communities and can be in tension with it. How do we resolve the never-ending conflicts between individual interests and the good of the community?

Music provided by our Albany UU Virtual Choir, Elena Karpoff, Randy Rosette

Feb 28, “The Price of Community,” Rev. Sam Trumbore
Every community makes claims upon its members. It may ask for shared values and commitments. It may ask for shared behavioral norms. All communities ask for loyalty in some form. And all of them depend on mutual financial support.

Music provided by our Albany UU Virtual Choir, Elena Karpoff, Chris Jensen, Randy Rosette, Parody by Bob Franklin

Min of 5 families/households needed to run this training - it is available to the whole congregation!
Leah Purcell has a tool she can share with families, couples, or any household to strengthen connections and communication at home. Practicing Beloved Community - What love can I bring to this moment?

This month I’d like to share the wise and compassionate words from Teresa Honey Youngblood, the Family Ministry Coordinator of the Soul Matters Team. Like Teresa, I also struggle with how to respond with love to racist and classist comments. I hope you’ll join me in practicing taking a pause and reframing a response to answer, “What love can I bring to this moment?”

In joyful service,

Leah
Leah Purcell, Director of Religious Education and Family Ministry

The call of the Beloved Community to respond to hate with nonviolence and to seek to make friends of enemies can feel seriously unrealistic, if not sometimes unsafe. Those feelings are real. And, as we know, feelings aren’t fixed states of being, they are signposts, giving us information about where we are in the moment, and where we might want to go in the near future.

This month’s mantra challenges us to let difficult and strong emotions pass through our psyches, and either despite them or in light of them, ask ourselves: What love can I bring to this moment?

There will be no right answer to this question. Each challenging situation is going to be different. The win is going to be the pause and the asking of the question, the refocusing of one’s precious energy on love--selflove, love for another, or maybe love for the Holy that unites us all.

Here, we are talking both about a very small action, and a magnificent one. On the face of it, we are simply “going high” rather than getting bent out of shape when confronted with insult and injury. But what this really means is that in refusing to allow ourselves to be dragged into spiritual resentment or despair, we are demonstrating to others--and ourselves--that another world is possible, and it begins with the decision we make in the very next moment.

Here’s a simple example: a friend drops a casually classist comment on you and keeps talking as if it nothing happened. You, internally, feeling triggered: pause… What love can I bring to this moment? One choice might be to tell your friend, “Ouch! That comment hurt. Can I tell you why?” Another choice might be, “I love you, (friend), so I need to tell you that you did harm by what you just said.” Yet another, “I don’t think I would have phrased it like that, but I think you’re saying you don’t understand ___________ about working-class culture.” Or, maybe the most loving thing you could do for your friend and yourself would be to let the moment pass, making a mental note to come back to the words later, when you’ve had time to think.

Without the pause and reframing of What love can I bring to this moment?, many of us--myself (Teresa) included--would definitely struggle to make a connected, clear-headed decision in the above situation. So often, we react out of old patterns, either outwardly, inwardly, or both. In order for us to keep building the beloved community, we have to learn and relearn how to drop into heart center before responding, until the day that such responses become second nature for us.

With A Leap Across Gender Norms, A Rising Ballet Star Looks to Rewrite Rules of Dance

"The way that ballet dancer Ashton Edwards leaps through the air is pure art. The fact that he does it in pointe shoes is a rare feat...Ballet traditionally has very divided roles for men and women. Men need power to lift their female partners. Women are prized for their delicate precision and the ability to seemingly defy gravity...Classical ballet has long embraced stereotypical ideas about masculinity and femininity. Dances were often based on fairy tales with princesses and princes. But ideas about ballet are changing.

'It's really exciting to see choreographers nowadays blurring the lines of gender binary and sexuality,' says Edwards. 'We see men dancing with men and women dancing with women. And it doesn't always have to be a love connection. It can just be a partnership.'
As ballet changes to better reflect the real world, dancers of different colors, body types and sexuality see there's room for them in the professional dance world."

SOCIAL ACTION
Social Responsibilities Council Recommends

Food Drive Contribution Opportunity - Grassroot Givers
Our near neighbors, Grassroot Givers, has asked if Albany UUs would be interested in contributing again to their food drive. They are looking for partners to stock their ONEWORLD Relief micro food pantry in front of their facility at 522 Washington Avenue. During the Pandemic, there has been a huge demand for food placed there and they’re having trouble keeping it stocked. They are looking for non-perishable food items (canned goods, pasta, etc.) that can be placed in the micro-pantry in front of the facility. You could make an appointment to leave bags of non-perishables on the cart outside of their door, or the food can be put directly into the pantry when dropped off.

The Albany UU Social Responsibilities Council (SRC) and Inclusivity Team recommend a Black Lives Matter vigil in Troy:
When: Saturdays,10:30-11:00 am
Where: Troy, the sidewalk at the former Price Chopper: 865 2nd Avenue, 12182
  • physical distance, masks
  • signs only, no chanting (except for meditative religious practice)
  • the vigil will automatically be canceled if the temperature is 20 or below OR if the wind chill is below 10 degrees Fahrenheit
