Virtual Volunteer Opportunities Where You Can Make a Difference Without Leaving the House

Cornerstones
Our Youth Programs are looking for virtual volunteers for their elementary and middle school levels who can do YouTube videos of themselves creatively reading and/or acting out books in fun ways. These will be reviewed and shared with their students to keep them engaged in learning. They also need 1:1 remote tutors for high school students in the following topics: Geometry, Algebra I, ESOL, and Chemistry.

Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna
COVID-19 specific opportunity: V olunteer to be a friendly caller : During these challenging times, our vision of creating "A World without Loneliness" has more meaning than ever. We worry that many of our seniors will experience isolation due to programs and services being cancelled. Won't you help by showing them that you care? (requires background check and training)

New Hope Housing
Virtual Volunteering Opportunity – Virtual Mentor
You can now sign up to become a virtual mentor for guests in shelter. You will share the topics that you are comfortable speaking with guests one-on-one about (including employment, housing, or just providing a safe space to chat) and will be able to sign up for 30-minute sessions. The calls will be over Zoom, so access to internet and a device that can use Zoom is essential. ( Y ou must complete training prior to signing up for this opportunity.)

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ANY OF THE ABOVE OPPORTUNITIES, PLEASE EMAIL SHANNON AT swhite@volunteerfairfax.org

Fun Activities To Consider While at Home

These websites provide TONS of ideas on various activities that you can do from home. From taking beautiful scenic tours online, to games and meditation practices. You are bound to find something enjoyable here!

> To give you plenty of options, Daily Caring has found a fantastic free website called Maria’s Place that’s full of creative activity ideas for older adults while at home.
>To find activity ideas on Maria's Place, focus on the categories for  Creative Activities  (crafts, coloring, holidays, and more) and  Body & Mind Activities  (word games, trivia, exercise, poems, and more).
>To make it easy to understand how to do an activity, many are explained through excellent video tutorials – like this  pine cone bird feeder .
>Take a virtual trip:
> Stream concerts, classes, or even karaoke sessions online:
  • The Metropolitan Opera is streaming performances every night at 7:30 pm EST and then saving the playback for 24 hours
  • Check out a calendar of upcoming live stream music events
  • Take a doodling class from the Kennedy Center’s Artist in Residence, Mo Williams. While he is known for being a children’s author, the Lunch Doodles series really can be for anyone.
