WELCOME (BACK) TO HIGH SCHOOL
Welcome to Intellectual Virtues Academy, A Long Beach Public High School! We hope that you have been enjoying your summer vacation. We are excited to welcome you to the campus in a few weeks in order to kick off an exceptional year.

To assist you in connecting with the school on pertinent information, you will receive newsletters on a regular basis. The newsletter will be your central place for information on calendar updates, school announcements, friendly reminders, photo spotlights, and instructional highlights on the intellectual virtues educational model. If you have any questions that are not addressed in a newsletter, please reach out to us by calling the main school number, 562.283.4456, or via email, info@academylongbeach.org. 

As an Academy family, your contribution cannot be overstated. Our goal is to provide the highest quality education to our students. As a collaborative team, we seek to foster the intellectual virtues in our students, staff, and community in a thoughtful, challenging, and supportive academic environment.

ACADEMY BEACH DAY: Friday, August 17 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Join the Academy for a fun beach day! Connect with current Academy students and incoming Academy students.

When: Friday, August 17 from 1-3 p.m.
Where: 1 Granada Avenue, near Rosie's Dog Beach. Look for the Academy flag and a white canopy to find us!

ACADEMY STUDENT AMBASSADORS

The Academy Student Ambassadors are a small group of students dedicated to the positive promotion of the school. The group will work on a volunteer basis to serve as liaisons between the current Academy community and prospective students. This is a leadership role which includes many rewards.

If you are interested in joining the A-Team and are not already an ambassador, please email Mrs. Day for more information.

CURRENT AMBASSADORS: To start off the school year, please join us for a Student Ambassador Training Session on Saturday, August 25 from either 10 a.m. to noon at the Academy. Email Mrs. Day with your RSVP.

INTERESTED AMBASSADORS: For new students or current Academy students who are interested in becoming an ambassador, we will have another Student Ambassador Training Session on Saturday, September 15.
SUGGESTED SCHOOL SUPPLIES 

The Academy provides a Google Chromebook for each student. Although most Academy textbooks and handouts are electronic, some hardcopy books and materials will be provided to students as well. The Academy asks that you treat materials with care, so that they will last for many years.

To help make our school materials last, we ask for each student to come prepared with their own supplies:

  • Writing utensils
  • Pencils (if mechanical, have extra lead.)
  • Ballpoint pens (black or blue ink)
  • Pink eraser
  • Pencil sharpener (hand-held with a top)
  • Loose-leaf notebook paper (college ruled)
  • One 1.5”-2” three-ring binder, tabbed binder dividers 
  • College ruled composition notebooks for each of your four core subjects 
DRESS CODE GUIDELINES

The Academy has adopted the following general guidelines to enhance student achievement, create a safe and distraction-free learning environment, foster school pride, and operate free from hazard or threat to students’ health, safety, and general welfare.

Clothing may not disrupt the learning environment. A student's dress and general appearance should not be so extreme that it draws attention to the student, nor should dress and appearance detract or interfere with the teaching and learning in the classroom.

School appropriate means: Safe, respectful, and conducive to learning. No sexually related, gang, weapons, alcohol, or any drug references on any item of clothing.

Bottoms
  • Pants, shorts, dresses, and skirts, must be free of logos and words, worn at a school appropriate length (where fingertips lay with arms by the side).
  • Jeans can only be worn without rips/slashes/or tears.
  • Pajama bottoms can only be worn on the designated spirit days.
  • Leggings can only be worn under other garments.

Tops
  • Shirts must be free of logos and words; exceptions include Academy, IVA, or collegial shirts.
  • Student cannot barre mid-drifts.
  • Tank tops must have straps at least 3 inches wide.

Outerwear
  • Jackets/sweaters must be appropriate for school.

Hats/Caps
  • Hats can be worn before, after school, and during breaks.
  • They must be taken off within the classroom. Beanies are okay.
  • No hoods over head at any time while on campus.

ACADEMY ENROLLMENT
The Academy is currently enrolling students for the 2018-19 school year.
We have limited spaces available in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade. Interested families can start the enrollment process by completing an  online application. After the application has been received, you will receive an email with next steps. For more information, contact Crystal Day at 562.283.4456.

CHANGE IN ENROLLMENT- We understand life circumstances change. To help us anticipate any additional spaces available for the upcoming year, please let us know if you Academy student will not be returning by emailing Mrs. Day. or Mrs. Sanders.

SCHOOL DAY HOURS
The school doors will open at 7:30 a.m. and class will begin at 8:15 a.m. The school day ends at 3:30 p.m., except on Thursday, which ends at 1:59 p.m. The Academy closes at 5:30 p.m. Mon., Tues., and Wed., and 4:30 p.m. on Thurs. and Fri.

BELL SCHEDULE-
  • 9th Grade and transfer students- Individual schedules will be issued during New Student Orientation. Look for more information in the next newsletter.
  • 10th and 11th Grade- Individual schedules will be emailed to your Academy email address before the first day of school. Parents will also be able to see schedules using Parent Portal in Illuminate. 
FAMILY ALLIANCE!
As a small, community-based school, we thrive on parent participation. We are looking for parents/guardians interested in forming our Family Alliance for the 2018-2019 school year. We are very interested in partnering with you to make key decisions about school programs.
