EVENT RECAP
Distinguished Speaker Luncheon featuring
The Florida Chamber Foundation’s Dr. Jerry Parrish
The Foundation’s Chief Economist discussed the state of the state
The Chamber hosted Dr. Jerry Parrish as our August Distinguished Speaker on Monday, August 26. Jerry informed our standing-room only audience about the factors he is watching, as Chief Economist and Director of Research for the Florida Chamber Foundation, to gauge Florida’s economic health.

In his informative presentation, Jerry pointed to the wealth of data available through the Florida Scorecard, www.thefloridascorecard.org , which tracks not only population and unemployment data, but also metrics on third-grade reading scores, high school graduation rates, income migration, sales tax revenue, poverty rate and voter participation—among many others—for each Florida county and the state overall. Statewide heat maps provide easily digestible comparisons between counties as well.

Jerry also indicated that he continues to closely monitor metrics that point to the likelihood of another recession hitting Florida, warning that in early 2018, factors suggested only a 9% likelihood of a recession in the coming year. Those same factors today suggest a 34% likelihood.

A Q&A followed the Jerry’s remarks, with the audience interested in ways to address the fiscal cliff, in which employees cannot afford to take a job or a promotion because they will lose critical support/benefits, and where the high level of investment dollars available are coming from.

The Greater Gainesville Chamber’s Distinguished Speaker Luncheons bring prominent leaders to engage with Chamber members in a small, informal setting. These distinguished leaders–which have included policymakers and leaders at the local, state and national level—provide Chamber members perspectives on a wide range of topics of interest to our community.
