It has been an emotional few days for everyone who cares about downtown Burlington. We are so thankful for the amazing efforts of the Burlington and area fire departments. Along with those who have worked so hard to revitalize these landmark buildings, Downtown Partners mourns their loss. We feel the extreme disappointment of those who had been looking forward to moving in to the Tama Complex, but we are also extremely grateful that there was no loss of life and that the buildings were not yet occupied. In the coming days and weeks, there will be much work to do. A number of businesses have been affected by this tragedy, and we are working to help them find solutions. In the meantime, many projects continue to move forward; the momentum of downtown revitalization is not abating. It has been heartening to see so many people looking out for each other. We encourage everyone to continue working together on making a great downtown even better.

Main Street Challenge Grant
Downtown Partners is seeking project proposals for the state funded Main Street Challenge Grant. The maximum grant award is $75,000 with a minimum 1:1 cash match required. The project must be downtown; work already begun is not eligible for funding. For application information, click here. The project summary deadline is August 17.

August Farmers Market Updates
The Jefferson St. Farmers Market has a few things in the works this month. Due to the Tama fire, the market will take place in the 400 and 500 blocks for at least the next two weeks. On August 9, join us for Living Well Day in the 200 block of N. Fourth, along with the seventh annual jalapeño eating contest. On August 16, bring the kids down for free horse drawn trolley rides during the last market before school starts. A special thanks to Two Rivers Bank & Trust for their support of the market.

Public Presentation of Downtown Plan
The City and a stakeholder group working with consultants on an area wide plan for downtown are wrapping up their work. Long range possibilities have been outlined for public improvements on the 100 block of S. Third, the current post office location, and the former Dresser Rand site on the edge of downtown. The public is invited to a review session of the final draft at the Burlington Public Library on August 28 at 5:30 PM. We hope you will attend - pretty intriguing stuff!

The parking lot at Main and Valley has been completed, which increases the number of on-street spots available. The public parking lot at Sixth and Washington is now getting much needed improvements as well.

Stick around downtown on Labor Day weekend - Memorial Auditorium is bringing back Heritage Fest with music and family fun on August 31 and September 1!

Those fences by the buildings in the 300 and 400 blocks of Valley mean that new roof work is starting. It's awesome to see these landmark buildings in the Manufacturing and Wholesale Historic District undergoing rehab for mixed commercial/residential use.
