Fr. Mark's June Message: "Something Special"

One Friday, sensing a high degree of anxiety in the classroom, the high school teacher said, "Look, put away your books. Everybody take out a piece of paper and list each of the other students' names on that paper, and write something nice about each one."
That's what the students did for the entire class. She collected the papers, she went home, and over the weekend she listed the names of all the students and all the nice things the people had to say about them. When she went in on Monday morning, she gave the papers out to each one. And immediately the tenor of the class changed. She even overheard one of the pupils whisper to another that "I never knew that anybody thought anything nice about me." And so they were able to progress...   Read more.

Archbishop Gomez Statement on the K illing of George Floyd
...We should all understand that the protests we are seeing in our cities reflect the justified frustration and anger of millions of our brothers and sisters who even today experience humiliation, indignity, and unequal opportunity only because of their race or the color of their skin. It should not be this way in America. Racism has been tolerated for far too long in our way of life... Read the entire statement here.

GLOBAL PANDEMIC AND UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD

All humanity is being put to the test. The Covid-19 pandemic puts us in a situation of unprecedented, dramatic and global difficulty whose power to destabilize the plans we have for our lives is growing day by day. The pervasiveness of this threat calls into question aspects of our way of life that we have been taking for granted. We are living painfully a paradox that we would have never imagined: to survive the disease we must isolate ourselves from each other, but if we were ever to learn to live isolated from one another, we would quickly realize how essential for our lives is life with others... Missionary Storytellers

Fr. Mario Menin SX comments on the Xaverian perspective on Pope Francis' Message for the 54th World Communications Day, May 24:
"The great love story between God and humanity, which Jesus at the center, has been renewed, for us, in the "story" of the Founder. The Spirit of the Living God - according to St. Paul (2 Cor 3: 3) - writes also on t human hearts. God's love writes also in us, in our hearts. Therefore, every "story," even that of our Founder, can become inspired, and turn into a masterpiece of God's grace, "an appendix of the Gospel." Without a doubt, even the "story" of Guido M. Conforti is perfumed with the Gospel's scent, bearing witness to the Love that transforms life..." Read more.

Covid-19 and the African economy

While it seems that the Covid-19 emergency, after having raged in Italy and in Europe, is losing strength here, we cannot escape the question of what is happening in Africa and what is the impact of Covid-19 in that Continent that has a very precarious socio-economic and health structure. The information is scarce and inaccurate. Reflections on Laudato Si

WHAT NATURE CAN TEACH US ABOUT INTERCONNECTEDNESS

Globalization means that the products I consume impact the conditions in which people live and work on the other side of the globe, and the food I eat was likely grown thousands of miles away. The challenge will be taking the lessons we learn in this time and using them to make those connections more just. We must remember how our actions impact each other, even after life gets busier and it is once again easy to forget our interconnectedness amid the fast-paced world. As Pope Francis writes in  Laudato Si',  "interdependence obliges us to think of one world with a common plan" (164). Discover more.
