It is still summer, and if you doubt it, just step outside! It's a great time to stay in the air conditioning or find a beach where there's a breeze and a large umbrella and, of course, a good book or two. I am dreaming of the fall while I'm doing my summer reading and anticipating the great events forthcoming at our store. We can't give away details yet, but we are hosting some great events -- including one of America's greatest humorists, a famous sports figure, one of New England's top CEOs, and an Oscar-winning actress. Plus, lots of great fiction writers and memoirists. You can always check out what we have announced HERE, and we will be adding details soon about all the exciting events. In the meanwhile, I'm going to finish my book in the shade of a big tree while enjoying a cool beverage.

The Middleman by Olen Steinhauer
Rachel Proulx, FBI expert on terrorist underground movements, has been placed in charge of investigating a clandestine group known as the Massive Brigade. As the Brigade begins to execute their revolutionary plot, Proulx takes on the competing distractions of a nosy media pundit, a loose-cannon colleague, and the challenge of figuring out the elusive motives of the odd-couple behind the mysterious outfit. Take the tightly-wound cat-and-mouse interplay of All The Old Knives and ratchet up the stakes by a notch or three, and you have The Middleman, riveting reading for lovers of suspense everywhere.
This novel is all about family, friendship, and community. Set in the same fictional Vermont town that appeared in her first novel, Miller presents a story of a mysterious will, a lost dog, and a big-box store that is threatning to change life in Guthrie forever. The people who inhabit Guthrie have known each other for a long time, are always willing to lend a hand, and are known for doing what is right. I loved Louise Miller's first book and I was even more moved and charmed by this one.
Tamara Shopsin is the daughter of Kenny Shopsin, the famously cantankerous chef/owner of a general-store-turned-restaurant made famous by Calvin Trillin, among many other loyal patrons. In charmingly episodic fashion, Tamara tells stories from her childhood in pre-corporate Greenwich Village, when the rents were low and the food-safety regulations were, uh, lax. A worthy addition to the Old New York City genre.

This stunning debut draws upon, then traverses, the line between passion and enthusiasm. Phoebe, Will, and John Leal's voices work both together and against one another in such a way that Kwon creates a glittering and mesmerizing portrait of grief, love, and fanaticism. It is dark, creepy, and utterly awesome.

The Return Of The Kids' ARC Program

|
The Kids Summer ARC Program is back! Through Labor Day (September 3rd), anyone from the ages of 8 to 17 may participate. On weekdays, from 10:00am to 5:00pm and on weekends from 11:00am until 4:00pm, any young reader may check out a free advance copy of a book to read. All we ask is that when you return the ARC (as they are known in the book biz), you fill out a short form expressing how you felt about the book. Your review may even end up here in the newsletter! This is a cool way to read hot titles before publication and give feedback to our staff about them. It's totally free, and totally fun!

This wonderful picture book tells the story of how a little lost stray dog finds a home with a surprised little girl. The illustrations are whimsical and busy with action while the text is a simple recitation of emotions -- happy dog, sad dog, hopeful dog, lucky dog -- which will help young children learn these feelings. Plus, how can you not love a book with the theme 'every dog is a good dog'!
